CRL Question

I have a question and as stupid as it may be I'm going to ask it anyways because if I've learned anything from reading comments on this board... it's that people on this board seem to have info that Cal South has that they won't share. So here it goes... what are the chances that a high level F2 team gets the approval for CRL play in? many families are stressing over trips planned etc. that are on the play in weekend as we wait for the yay or nay and I'm on the fence with the likelihood of the team getting accepted. The team did well in league and surf cup, etc. but they're not F1 until next fall (2019-2020) and it's been my experience with my eldest child that CRL typically consists of Current F1 teams so.... yeah just wondering if anyone else has any input, besides snarky remarks which I'm sure I'll get (and laugh at). Thanks in advance. BTW Cal South said the typical response, "We review everything we will get back to you...*cashes check immediately" haha

I would think you have a very good chance as CRL has lost some of its appeal over the years. I don't think they get quite as many applications as they have in the past. This is just my opinion--I have nothing to back this up!! :)

As you likely know, being admitted to the league will come down to how well you do in the Play-in tournament. The format for that has changed over the years. Last year they just had groups play out and took the group winners, at least for my daughter's team it was like that. The year before there were 2 rounds, if I recall correctly. I don't know what age group you are looking at, but if there are 16 teams this year, there will be 10 available slots for next year if they stay at 16.

The play-in tournament is a good way to get some high quality games. If you treat it like a regular tournament or showcase, you'll find that it was worth while.

That being said, if the team in question was admitted to Surf Cup, then I would expect that it should have competing in CRL as a goal. You get really solid games with a lot of up-side. A bye in the first round of National Cup. A 'pathway' to the Far West Regional and a shot at whatever the National League is.

I agree with JP. Cal South will assess your team, look at who has applied, and will make a judgement. Your flight status can affect your chances. Teams are required to maintain 3/4’s of the players from the previous year to participate and depending on turn over could open a slot or two. Another consideration to create opportunities for teams newly applying is the age group. In some age groups they have far more teams then others.

Yes that is where my concern comes in, or my uncertainty I should say because although we were admitted and did quite well in Surf cup as someone mentioned above. We did compete F2 this past year instead of F1 because of the amount of new players on the roster (coach wanted boys to get used to playing as basically a new team). This year the team all stayed put with the exception of one boy. This is 2008 so it's the first year they're able to compete in CRL which could be hit or miss... a lot of teams applying or not. Application has been submitted... the parents are just trying to figure out what realistically the chances are for initial play in admittance.

I keep hearing that CRL has lost it's appeal over the years, some coaches and parent see it as "extra games" and some see it as more. For my eldest child it was basically teams she would've normally played anyways, the same top teams that always played each other in league and tournaments but still exciting nonetheless, but I guess I can see how some parents and coaches feel meh about it. Not everyone's cup of tea I guess...

Apply for play-in and see what happens.

They either take your money or decided they have better teams they can get the $700 out of.

If your team is accepted & does good enough in the play-in rounds you pay more and get in the actual league

Thanks, yes I applied and we are in the waiting period, At least if we don't get accepted to the play in we get refunded the $695 that's always a positive haha

They'll just take your money and if things are trending as they have in all of these type of leagues/circuits/tournaments, you might even tie or win a game. Saw some real bad F1 teams at National Cup that would even have issues playing at Governors. Im sure teams just selling parents the status. Some scouts were showing up to games, watching 5-10 mins and moving on.

With that being said, you will usually find at least one really good team in your bracket. One team will usually be solid and others might be a F1 team selling a dream. At F2 going to be real uphill but never know. Seen teams blow up in the middle of playing in. Good luck!
