04s - Games of the Week

Ok...I'll bite first!

"Game of the Week":
Slammers Macias v Surf - A great match up of opposing styles! This is their second matchup in the new Age Group (Surf beat them in the Semi's of Surf Cup in Aug). Surf is coming off a tough weekend at Blues Cup and I'm sure Macias will be looking to avenge their last meeting.

"One to Watch"
Real v Strikers OC

"Grudge Match"
Beach LB v WC is a big one for my DD after the tough loss on Sunday in Blues Cup. She hasn't stopped talking about the upcoming match up since we walked off the field Sunday afternoon.

"Worth Noting"
Rebels v DMCV Sharks - a tough match up for DMCV, but will let all of us know what they are made of!

Hey Tech

I didnt see a prediction for LAGSD vs. my Rangers?
Or is this one of those locks of the year you leave on a recorded message to bet the house on LAGSD

I think Galaxy SD will be favored to win league this year, with Eagles and IE Surf rounding out the top 3 from what I've seen on paper. But both Albion and Rangers will be able to complicate things, no doubt.

Don't forget.....it was to some extent this Rangers team that helped the 03 IE Surf team lock up league by defeating Galaxy - SD, Carlsbad at the time, 1-0 in the final league game of the season last year. Both teams will come to play!

Yes, thanks for the reminder! Soccer can be a cruel game. Our girls haven't forgotten about that one. 8/9 starters return.

This is the weekend where league play comes into action. SCDSL, CSL, SDDA / Presidido will all be playing games within their respective leagues. SCDSL will be holding their showcase event while the others kick off actual league play.

Here are the games of the week:

SCDSL - Flight I - Fall Showcase, Sunday - September 11th
  • Legends FC vs. Strikers OC
  • RSC - EGSL vs. Strikers OC

SCDSL - Flight II - Fall Showcase, Sunday - September 11th

  • Strikers FC - South Coast vs. Freedom FC
  • Freedom FC vs. SDSC - Navy

CSL - Silver Elite North, Saturday - September 10th
  • Simi Valley Eclipse vs. LA Premier FC

SDDA - Flight I, Saturday - September 11th
  • Rebels vs. DMCV - Sharks

Interested to see more of Strikers OC, they've been kind of quiet this summer. Strikers FC - SC v. Freedom, didn't they just play each other a bunch of times recently? SDSC Navy seems to be coming on lately after struggling early. Curious to see LA Premiere. I haven't seen them in many tournaments this summer (if any). I know their U-12 team had a lot of 03's, so I'm curious how their 04's will look like. I've always been a fan of their technical style of play. Regarding DMCV Sharks - Toumi, somebody didn't like their Tango ranking, but they beat Rebels twice in June (at the Rebels tourny no less) and Rebels has shown very well since then. Could a Toumi win could justify their ranking?

LAGSD 2, Rangers 1
Fields at Fullerton Sports Park are a disgrace. We had two girls go down today. Both of our center mids. Land mine sized sink holes all over the field. One knee injury and one ankle. Hoping the news from the specialists is positive on Monday.

The drought is over! At least at the Venom field it is. Some parts on the field had grass so tall the ball would disappear.

What a joke. My dd will never step on that piece of sh&t field ever again. Now I know why my man Frank the Tank left that club.
Would like to see more "neutral" fields in cases like this. Clubs need to be honest if they can't provide an acceptable playing field.

How'd Venom look? Saw them a couple times going into summer and they had some athletes and played hard.
Their play is physical with some speed! Some good battles on the field today. Their striker had a good move inside to finish their second score. Their defense plays very high. Allowed us to drop in a few balls for some breakaways. Venom keeper had a great save from a free kick that was tracking just inside the right post. First time I see them so I am not familiar with their style of play. It was tough to play a possession game with the field condition, but overall it was a good match.

More importantly -- how did the Venom sideline look? Still have moms running up and down the sideline with pom poms? From the last time I saw them, you couldn't even tell who the coach was they had so many moms and dads walking the entire sideline yelling and coaching the kids.

Did not see any of that. I heard the same through the soccer grapevine about the sideline and some of their physical play more on the dirty side. As I mentioned previously it was a good match. They took a very early lead with a deflected ball off a corner kick. Then went up 2-0 just before the half. This may have calmed the masses. Sidelines on both sides did step up the cheering in the second half as IESW possessed more and put more pressure on top to draw the match.

Aside from playing sand soccer on half the field (yes the grass was that high), the field was short and narrow (and eneven with lots of potholes). For the 1st half, our coaches literally instructed our players to play kickball and forget possession. Based on the field conditions I actually thought that was the best strategy, but it actually backfired as we got down early and couldn't convert on our chances. Second half we went back to our style of play and controlled most of the half. Getting out of there with a tie actually felt like a win and I'm sure it felt like a loss for Venom. Venom will surely be favored playing at home as they play physical and have good size and speed. Rematch will be a hard fought game that's for sure.
