England player sends a pass. At that moment Lauren is offside but she doesn’t intervene; she walks and puts herself in a correct position.

The Chinese defender heads the ball away (in my head, this resets the whole thing. It’sa new play); Lauren recovers the ball and passes back, this other player shoots and scores.

The referee, after consulting the VAR, disallows the goal because of Lauren’s position on the first pass.

Yeah, wasn't a deliberate enough play by the defender to reset the offsides. Whole new writing and guidance in the Laws about how deliberate it has to be.
