The Day Kepa Azpiliqueta became manager of Chelsea

The difference between being the hero or the goat is the winning or losing of the game. He gambled, he lost big...though a keeper would be one of the very few crazy enough to try it.

Hi didn't lose big. He did his job and stopped one kick. His two teammates were not capable of scoring.

He's getting roasted in the press for missing the second shot, which was a ground dive which was stoppable. From a technical point of view, it's because he was waving his hands and not in a set position, trying to distract the shooter, so he wasn't able to dive leading with his hands, so the ball slips under him. Not saying it's right or wrong to blame him for it....just that he's getting the blame in the press and public because he defied his manager and they lost.

p.s. the exact same thing (in the shoot out, not the refusal to be subbed) to my then 9 year old son in a tournament final last year. He got the blame too despite a striker missing a shot which hit the crossbar.
