National Cup - 04s

A quick analysis of the G04 National Cup draw. I understand they may have their own "unique" (more lazy than unique) way of placing/seeding teams but here are the consequences (on paper) of that.

9 Groups of 4 teams, with 6 byes.

First off, the six teams that got byes.
(Ranking within the 42 teams accepted for Natl Cup)
#1 - SD Surf Academy EGSL
#3 - Arsenal FC Pre ECNL Brow
#5 - Beach FC LB Arrache
-----------------------------------------
#13 - LA Galaxy South Bay Elite
#14 - IE Surf Premier RB
#18 - So Cal Blues Kale

The teams below the line should not have been byed to the second round.

Pool Play
I am first going to rank the pools based on the average SRS (see my G04 rankings) of the teams of each pool.
1. Pool I (7.03)
2. Pool C (6.95)
3. Pool D (6.83)
4. Pool A (6.77)
5. Pool G (6.65)
6. Pool H (6.60)
7. Pool F (6.58)
8. Pool B (6.33)
9. Pool E (6.11)

Next is the top ranked team in each pool and their SRS
1. CDA Slammers FC Cerritos Macias (Pool G, 8.93)
2. Real SoCal EGSL (Pool A, 8.51)
3. Strikers FC - OC EGSL Bull (Pool H, 8.46)
4. LA Galaxy SD Elite (Pool D, 8.45)
5. West Coast FC Pre-ECNL Swanson(Pool I, 8.07)
6. Eagles (Pool F, 7.75)
7. So Cal Blues Dido (Pool C, 7.74)
8. Rebels Gold (Pool E, 7.36)
9. Legends FC (Pool B, 6.74)

Now a look at which Pools are the most balanced (used Standard deviation of each teams SRS in pool)
1. Pool B << most balanced
2. Pool C
3. Pool I
4. Pool E
5. Pool F
6. Pool A
7. Pool D
8. Pool H
9. Pool G << least balanced

Well at least you get your money's worth if you don't have a bye. That's IF you get out of pool play in the 1st week.

In my opinion I don't think we want balanced teams in pool play right? I believe the "best" 6 teams should get byes (whatever they define "best" as) and then 7 goes in pool A, 8 goes in pool B, ... 15 to pool I, then whip back around to 16 to pool I, 17 to Pool H, etc.

This way the higher ranked teams are rewarded by playing lower ranked teams.

Yes, that is the correct way. That is not what they did or attempted to do. Just wait until you see the Presidents draw. The top two teams (out of 66) are in the same pool, lol.

If you don't I will. But if you want to split it, I can do the Presidents (and maybe the Governors, Uggh 115 teams) and you can do National.
Best idea you've had! Since your DD plays for ? you should Presidents and the teams you are most familiar with.

How does CalSouth decide where to hold the Governors/Presidents/National Cup games--is there a formula or some sort of rotation they use to determine which games are held at Oceanside or Silverlakes or <shudders> Lancaster?

Venue size and field conditions. The bigger the venue, the better for Cal South. The more premium venues will get National Cup so Silverlakes and the later rounds may go to smaller sites with good fields. Oceanside, San Bernardino, Surf Complexes, etc. With some of the new venues coming online Lancaster gets overflow.

Over the next few weeks I'll be putting together the Tech. Specs. for National Cup, feel free to PM me any information / scouting reports you may have and I'll add it to build a beefed up version of a breakdown.

Much appreciated.

And I will do Presidents Cup and maybe (GULP!) Governors. So feel free to PM me any scouting reports on those teams you may have. Tango Specs?
