What is selection process for USYNT Training Camps?

BRONZE
Does anyone know how players are invited to USYNT Training Camps? Are players recommended solely by coaches or do scouts receive a list of players from each team to observe during showcases and tournaments?

Neither, really. Or at least not entirely.

Each region has someone tasked with leading it and identifying potential YNT candidates. They will go to a lot of games, watch a lot of film, will review things like INSTAT scores, if available (although INSTAT is ridiculously unreliable and punishes certain positions, generally the cream does seem to rise to the top), and will rely on a network of scouts within their region to recommend players for review. Many of those scouts will indeed be youth coaches in various leagues.

If a player performs well enough or is recommended highly enough by enough scouts, they will typically be invited to a regional ID camp.

For those that are deemed as deserving (or just played really well when the right people are watching), they will then be invited to a national YNT camp for further evaluation.

From those camps, the YNT is formed for specific events.

USYNT may have one scout that has to cover an entire region for an age group. Scout most likely has another job (e.g. club coach) and can only attend a finite number of showcases to scout games. It's an imperfect process with limited resources.

I believe alot of the scouting network was let go during covid so the above statements are accurate.. there are less eyes out there.
Prior to covid, I saw scouts (sometimes 2 or 3 together) sitting for full games or at least a half the games depending on who they were watching.
In San Diego last October the scout appeared alone. The game I was at that the scout attended it appeared they split their time between two games during one 40min half.
I was told by our DOC that they feel they are having to do more work by uploading film, discussions with scouts etc. because there are less resources now vs. a few years back.

Yes, at tournaments they will be given lists.

BTW, I'm always a bit skeptical when I hear our coach/doc talk about the YNT scouts. I don't think they have a solid understanding of the process unless there is a history of their kids going into the regional or national camps but I do think most DOCs are trying to sell their top kids to the scouts when they talk.

From what I've learned this year from this process...
4 regionally located YNT scouts.
Main effort is coming from DOC's and coach's to the scouts. Main coming from inviting and getting to come watch games. We have had our region scout at 3 of our match's this year when we had multiple age groups playing against another strong club.

I would also say the most important factor has come from the recommendations sent from the DOC. Prior to each region camp they are responsible to send out a form to the YNT of their recommendations.
We are lucky that 2 of my daughters have gotten selected this year to participate, but believe this was only the case by having our coach's and doc really on their game and hounding the scout to get our club seen.

In all reality, this process is far from perfect since they don't have the bodies to be able to spend the time to find top talent. A ton of deserving player's are missing out just because there is no way that they have the time to truly see and evaluate the talent that is out there!

There has to be a better method to give more players a shot. I wish they could construct a more localized programming to send through a true process.

Thanks for sharing about the process for your dds.
First off, 100% congrats on having two dd get selected. Also, great job on your Doc for working hard to have your kids seen. My dd applied for an internship last year and thought she made it only to be told she was alternate or next up if someone bails. She was bummed and told a friend. Her friends mom knew the owner and said she could make a call to get my kid in 100%. My kid said, "No, I want to earn it."
From my experience, The Club, The Doc, The Coach and The Training Center Doc all played a roll 100% how to pay to get noticed by the four scouts for all the USA.
I agree we have to find a better way. The Doc has way to much sway, moo. Too many middle men in the middle and it can cause for too much power over a kid and their parent.

I would recommend regional YNT Training Camps once a year. California can have one. Invite hundreds of girls from Socal & NoCal to come play soccer and train. No Docs allowed or coaches or team managers.....lol. Player just shows up with cleats, water, blank uniform with no logos and just go play and then let the YNT scouts and coaches narrow the list down to a good number that they can now monitor and watch. No influence by Doc or dadddy with money.....lol! I'm sorry, I coundn't resist. No HSS allowed either and you must be 100% devoted to soccer only.
