Transfer Portal - May 1

I always thought D1 was about social media. I mean, how much "athletic" money are you getting at a good D1... because there are a lot of D1 schools nobody has ever heard of and maybe that pays better. So if you play at UCLA, how much athletic money are you getting when nearly the entire roster is considered elite?
I can only speak for my DD but she is getting $40K academic and $10K athletic for the 25/26 year. The rest is on us.

Well, $10k is certainly nothing to sneeze at but I wonder if that's the norm or exception. The academic is great but, as we negotiate for my younger right now, I'm learning what "need based" really means. If you make a good living, you apparently don't "need" help and get to pay full price.

Our DD is an incoming Freshman at a Mid-Major D1, she was thankfully able to stack Athletic and Academic Money to get the majority of her Room/Board/Tuition covered. Feel very blessed. She had interest and was offered by a schools in the B10, SEC, WCC, Big West and MW. She cast a wide net and went to a lot of ID camps which helped a lot. She ended up in a different conference after she committed and then de-committed due to a coaching change, and reopening her recruiting in April 2024 after she committed in June 2023. She wants to be a Dr., Dermatologist, and will be majoring in Biology. The highest athletic money she was offered was 65%, less, and much less by others. Where she ended up picking was 50/50 athletic and academic for her total aid, WUE was a huge help. She loves the coaching staff and school. She also picked a school/conference where she could get on the field early…the P4’s told her she would red-shirt her FR year, sit her R-FR year, and would be competing for time her R-SO year. She is a GK and did not want to sit 2 to 3 years to play 2 to 3 years.

Only 7-10 schools a year have a real chance at a Natty…only the P4’s, schools like Santa Clara, St. Louis, etc. will not be able to compete any longer. For my kids school/conference…winning the conference tourney and getting into the NCAA’s is the “Goal”.

Don’t chase the sweatshirt, start the recruiting process early, choose a level where you can get on the field, where they have the kids major, and don’t go broke or in debt for school…things are changing and AI will dramatically change what careers will be around…no offense to anyone, but don’t don’t go $300k in debt for Art History, communications, journalism, sociology, or Theatre….the juice has to be worth the squeeze. We were VERY lucky, got great advice early and it made a huge difference in our DD’s journey.

Total Transparency…if our kid got caught up with the roster limits and all the other BS, we would be looking D2, D3, NAIA…D1 college athletics are changing and not for the good.
