Same coach for X years or change clubs

At our club, the same coach stays with the same team for many years. Unless the kid changes teams at the same club they won’t ever see a new coach for years. I would say 5-8 years are normal ranges for a coach to have a team. I like our coach and my son likes his coach and the team. But my son feels like after 3 years he would like to learn from someone new which makes sense to me.

How do your clubs handle it? If a kid stays with the same team does the coach eventually change? After how many years? Would you change clubs if the coach didn’t change? Is it a bad idea to switch clubs just to get a new coach?

Um most clubs I have been with have mandatory coaching changes after 2 yrs . No coach as the same team for more than 2 seasons. At some point the coach loses effectiveness with that group and the players tune them out. Plus the coaches tend to get lazy on player selection and the players knowing they will get their "spot" no longer play with an edge.

Unfortunately, at our club, the coaches do not change every two years. Most have been with the same top team for 5 to 8 years as I mentioned. I completely agree about their effectiveness. So I guess I have no choice but to change clubs if we want a different coach, which just seems ridiculous after three years with the same coach and he said he has no plans on leaving this team when we asked him last week.

I’m curious do other people here also have coaches change every couple of years?

It depends. Grass is not always greener on the other side. If your player kicks ass, then he can jump teams and get minutes right away and be happy with the new coach. If he is mediocre, plays on the B team, getting good minutes, moving away from a good situation is likely a bad move.
Our team got a new coach, he didn’t like some of the players from the A team from the year before and got rid of them. Those players probably wished there was no coach change.

3 years max at the various clubs my kids have been at. Some teams get new coaches after 2. But definitely by the end of the 3rd year.

I think it's good to switch after a few years. Important to learn different things from different coaching styles I think.

In terms of switching clubs to get a new coach, I think that depends on if the coach likes your kid or not. If the coaching style fits your kid and thus the kid is a priority on the team/club, I think you've got a good thing going and I wouldn't necessarily change clubs just to get him a new coach if other things with the team and club are satisfactory.

Is he getting better relative to his cohort? Staying level? Falling behind? If the latter two, maybe consider a switch of coaches or clubs if your son values improvement over the social aspect of his current team. There is a benefit to your son being comfortable.
