Premier SuperCopa 2010G - Coach Behavior

StacieL11

BRONZE
Last week my family attended Premier SuperCopa. This has been our family's 3rd time at this event. My youngest son played in this twice a couple years back in Colorado and Texas, and had an amazing experience. My daughter’s team played this time in Utah.

I’ve been in the youth soccer community for years now. I know how crazy things can get, especially at the younger ages in big tournaments like this. However, what I saw in the 2010G championship game was shocking and disappointing.

The game was between Midwest United FC Chicago Premier (coached by JP Berruti) and EJE7 (coached by Eddie Johnson). From my perspective, EJE7 was too much for my liking, too negative and animated. However, the Midwest Coach, JP, was completely out of control, and in my opinion, should not be around young children.

The atmosphere of the championship game was something no young girl should be a part of. Watching the game live, (and now on video) makes me sick to my stomach.

(there was so much wind, you could hardly hear anything the coaches were saying. But their body language says it all)

I have time stamped some major moments, but the whole game was uncomfortable to watch, even without sound due to the wind.

Having attending the game and being familiar with the team I can tell you that your single-game perspective of the MWU coach is inaccurate, and “should not be around children” is an extreme and unfounded claim .

The championship game was admittedly full of emotion on both sides (parents, players and coaches) and there were multiple questionable calls (handball, offsides) that precipitated the events, and I’d expect any coach to protest those were the situation reversed, especially in a big game. No cards or warnings were issued by the referee, so while “body language” may cause a concern, whatever verbal communication transpired was apparently appropriate from her perspective.

So you are certainly entitled to your opinion but this single game video does not tell the story.

If you want to talk about the game, let’s talk about the great players on both sides, as it was a fun and competitive game to watch and in the end it’s about the players not the coaches.

Watched about 15mins of game play. Nice to see a physical game being played and a coach who cares.

Too many soft teams and parents in So. Cal with pampered princesses. Welcome to the world of competitive sports out side the state.

Highly suggest golf or tennis at your local country club if this is over the top.

I’ve seen EJ do questionable things at 3v3. Berating little girls from his own team and such. I do not support him any longer.

Physical game is one way to put it. I lost count of the number of times a player kicked a leg out from under an opponent from behind.

seems like the people that use him swear by him, though some of that could be that they are spending $$$$ to send them down to Florida at his lab

His behavior was pretty ridiculous. I'd be pretty embarrassed if I were a parent/player on that team. He should be more upset with himself for not teaching the kids to play the game right than anything else.

I'll take a slightly different view here.
The officiating crew did not manage the coaches or the game very well.
The stall on the PK should have never happened and although it's not the job of the ref to own the coaches behavior it should be well understood that if you tolerate that behavior towards your officiating crew or other team you are allowing the game to get out of control. There are parts of the game that are clearly up to the refs to make better decisions about what they will tolerate .

With that out of the way.
Charged emotion is becoming more typical for finals or semi final types games into the younger ages. That's why i call out the officiating above. I've officiated state high school champtionship games and College Cup bracket games you have to be prepared and understand the teams, coaches and what's at stake when you are officiating. 15 years ago i'd say a U12 game wouldn't be like this. Today it's the norm regardless of age and its getting more overboard.

Good trainers don't automatically mean they are good coaches. There is a skill to teaching a technique and there is a skill to coaching.
Good coaches did their work at practice and realize there is little they can do to make decisions for the players during a game. Constantly yelling just means the kids have tuned you out. I hear what the kids say in during the games when the sidelines are yelling.

There may have been an intimidation issue here between the center ref and both of the coaches. These joy sticking coaches drive me frigging nuts. You've taught these girls to punt the ball out of the back and they have very little understanding of spacial concepts (something I would expect at this age -- and have seen). I couldn't find a 4+ pass sequence. Eventually European teams are going to pass the USWNT as they continue to build out their programs. This kind of coaching is a big reason why we will lose that race. Pay to play is a problem, but I think "win now over development" is just as detrimental. We simply need to raise the bar when it comes to play quality if we want to be competitive with the rest of the world.

Without knowing what he's saying, he's either very passionate about the game OR and ass. Regardless, he should've been told not to invade the field. And the ref should've told him "dude, it is a PK, period, it is not up for debate, one more word and you are out". That's it. Nothing beyond every other coach does during a game.

OK, relax, Simeone. There's NOTHING whatsoever in this game that we don't see every weekend in CA. When I read your comments I was like "OMG, I'm going to watch some serious Italy vs Uruguay or Atletico de Madrid vs Osasuna or something like that." but no, just your typical run of the mill weekend game. Nothing special. Your comment about "little princesses" tells us more about your own traumas and resentments than anything else.
