Major League Soccer is looking to launch a professional women’s soccer league sometime after the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
While MLS is targeting a 2027 launch, that plan is “in flux” as time is needed for preparation and building proper infrastructure, including a new media rights deal that MLS wants right out of the gate. One source stated that the women’s league is “going to happen, but exactly how is up in the air”.
The new league would not result from a buyout of the NWSL, as several ownership groups in the existing league do not favor that proposal, but will be an entirely new entity.
