Reporter Julie Watts had a previous article that was enlightening on this issue as well. The California Department of Public Health has been inconsistent and the reality is there is no way to reconcile their positions. Why were dance studios allowed but not modified outdoor individual training? This inconsistency and lack of logic has led to a lack of public confidence, an abeyance of local enforcement, and many people making up their own (sometimes more sensible) rules. It may behoove those of us who are interested to join one of the return to play groups, like the high school one mentioned in the article (https://www.facebook.com/groups/3873807422690945/?ref=group_header), in order to gain enough critical mass to spur better and more feasible guidance by the state of California. Does anyone know of a group that is creating an online petition or anything meaningful you can add your support to?

About 12k signatures so far. However, in-person teaching just got shut down today for most of California schools. If school is a no go, there is no chance they will open up sports.

Why Not? Outdoor is way better than indoor.
You're absolutely correct, but IMO youth sports is just an afterthought to the decision makers. If I recall correctly, bars were allowed to open a week before my kid returned to soccer practice back in June. Outside of this socalsoccer bubble we live in, alcohol consumption and many other things are all more important than club soccer.

Yup plus politically it's really hard to justify to the parents whose kid's don't play sports....why can't my little Sally go back to school when little Billy over there is playing soccer. Moreover, we'd be talking about "distanced" soccer because if they are close enough to have personal contact with each other without masks, they are good enough to go back to school without masks and the governor just mandated them for 3rd graders and above.

Whats the stance on Private Schools? They seem to operate under different rules. Im sure some will conduct business as usual.

Hopefully Club and travel sports can operate in a grey area. Is it fair to say those playing Rec and going to public school could do with out?

The governor made clear in his statement the order shutting schools in the applicable counties applies to private schools as well.

Just a thought, but maybe we can keep this thread to ideas for collective action on getting better guidance from the state? I appreciate we all have complaints and thoughts about whether or why the government will do something, but maybe this can be a resource for identifying avenues for effecting change.

Where is the petition here? https://www.change.org/p/gavin-newsom-california-youth-sports-have-to-resume Is it just the vague desire to have kids play sports. Is there one that actually proposes guidelines for outdoor individual training with spacing, something the state authorities can plausibly agree with?

Not realistic, and not going to happen fast enough. Let's not turn this thread into another massive political thread (there are plenty of those) rather than discussing ways of getting specific and prompt action. I think most of us can agree that outside, distanced, training should be allowed. If we can unify and get our voices heard on something like that, without being distracted by general politics, we may be able to make a difference.

I don‘t care which political party you are this guy has to go. He has been a failure by all accounts. I prefer a Republican replacement, however at this point I will take any party. Fill out the recall form and mail it in and let the state vote on this clown again.

Good luck wood work.

Even if I agreed with you, it is like using a bazooka to kill a mouse. If our goal is getting at least socially-distanced training allowed, convincing everyone to recall the governor is not the best tool. You would also have to replace him with someone who is going to listen to our voices on this single issue. The new governor would be focused on the litany of other reasons people voted Gavin out. Focus, people. Come on!

I'll sign or contribute to anything legit, but at this point l hate to say nothing will bring change soon enough.

I just want my kids to be kids... anyone know of any pick-up / underground leagues in SD County...or interested in organizing?

I purchased my kid a skateboard about 2 weeks ago. We have spent at least 4 hours daily at our local skatepark. Good cross training for soccer and a really positive social environment.

The act of getting him out isn’t the pure solution. If he knows he is fighting for his job he is going to do the things necessary to keep it. That is getting people back to work and other social issues that he will need to get to keep his vote. I am sure your attitude on things would change drastically if you were fighting to keep your job. This guy is no different. He currently sees that he can’t be fire until 2023 and he knows people won’t remember this crap when that times comes.

The local skate park here they closed and put bark down to stop people from using it.

Here's one for HS sports:

Support that one and many of the others.

I also regularly contact my local, district, state reps because I want them to represent me so I have a choice.

one of things about representative democracy is we've given too much power or authority to "elected" officials and the people's will is sometimes a afterthought or ignored.

With that we still have choices on how to raise children. Putting too much emphasis on organized youth sports and not teaching diversity or getting them involved or interested in other activities is sad to me. I work with a organization that raises funds and builds bicycles for young kids.

Amazing that I learned that many kids don't know how to even ride a bike, swim, stake, or even do basic arts and crafts in my county. So I wanted to do something to help beyond organized sports which are only affordable by a certain segment of our population.

Teach your kids the youth sports are but one of many possibilities and they don't need to rely on a coach or any organization to have fun. It's what you and them make of all the possiblites, ruining, biking, swimming, skating, hiking, ball play in the yard, beach, parks and when there old enough they will find there way and organize there own activities like my son and mates who train and play at least 3x a week with virtual no parent or coach involvement. They keep in touch via group chats with others and coaches and have like weekly sessions for a 1-2 hours in the evening. They set the agenda and run them and invite whoever.
