G2004 League Cup Preview (Round 2)

Rain threw a wrench into League Cup play last weekend and we have a mix of both Round 1 (4) and Round 2 (11) pool play games on tap this Sunday. A couple of the Round 2 pools will wait and play on Nov 13. Here is a look at my preview for League Cup games taking place this weekend. There are 15 three team pools in the second round, with all pool winners advancing plus one wild card team. The wild card team will likely come from a pool that has two 1-0-1 teams. With all the schedule changes, hopefully I didn't make too many mistakes. :)

G004 League Cup Preview (1st/2nd Round Pool Play)

Pool AA (The Group Previously of Death)
Location: Lancaster (First Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6
Winner Goes To: Pool AP (Fullerton Rangers White G, YASC Spartans FC SS)

Teams:
Saugus United AC (Bronze North, 5-2-3, GF: 20, GA: 12, Rank #204, SoS Rank #217)
Currently sits in second place in a very competitive Bronze North division. They currently don't have any impressive wins under their belt this season, though they have played the first place team in their division to two ties. With OC Premier dropping out it will come down to whether or not they play a tough full 50 minutes of soccer.

OC Premier Black (Bronze South, 6-3-3, GF: 37, GA: 16, Rank #153, SoS Rank #161)
Ducking League Cup to concentrate on finishing in second place in Bronze South. *** FORFEITED GAMES ***

FC England (Bronze West, 7-2-0, GF: 25, GA: 4, Rank #135, SoS Rank 189)
This is the team clicking on all cylinders in this pool. FC England has won six games in a row, including a convincing 4-1 trouncing of previously undefeated South Bay United. FC England is on track to finish 2nd place in Bronze West and a promotion to Silver for next season.

Prediction: 1) FC England, 2) Saugus United AC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AD
Location: Conejo Creek South, Thousand Oaks (First Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6
Winner Goes To: Pool AS (FRAM Ferren SEN, California Elite SC SN)

Teams:
Thousand Oaks FC AC (Bronze Beta, 9-1-2, GF: 45, GA: 8, Rank #165, SoS Rank #195)
The Thousand Oaks Challenge team prides itself on defense. They got an excellent draw and should be favored to advance on their home fields.

LA Premier FC Black (Bronze Central, 2-6-1, GF: 13, GA: 28, Rank #224, SoS Rank #167)
Will lose and get shutout by Thousand Oaks FC AC.

Celtic Hoops (Bronze Delta, 4-5-1, GF: 10, GA: 19, Rank #235, Sos Rank #225)
*** FORFEITED GAMES ***

Prediction: 1) Thousand Oaks FC AC, 2) LA Premier FC Black

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AE
Location: Lancaster Complex, Lancaster (First Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6
Winner Goes To: Pool AT (UIFC Venom SC SES, Ventura FC Strikers SA)

Teams:
FC North Valley AC (Bronze Gamma, 10-0-1, GF: 38, GA: 3, Rank #196)
They have only given up three goals in league play and are assured at this point a bump up to the Silver level for next year. Sol could challenge them if they don't bring their A game.

Sol (Bronze Alpha, 4-5-1, GF: 14, GA: 10, Rank #167, SoS Rank #167)
Sol is also difficult to score against and they could very easily pull off the upset. Both teams need to pound Valencia UTD as this pool could come down to a tie-breaker.

Valencia UTD 3162 AC (Bronze North, 2-7-1, GF: 7, GA: 19, Rank #240)
The record isn't good, but the goal differential isn't all that bad. If they pack in the defense, they could play the role of spoiler in these short 50 minute games.

Prediction: 1T) Sol, 1T) FC North Valley AC, 3) Valencia UTD 3162 AC

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AH
Location: Cabrillo Park, Upland (First Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6
Winner Goes To: Pool AW (IE Surf MB/SB West SES, Legacy FC SS)

Teams:
Valencia United AC (Bronze North, 5-3-2, GF: 26, GA: 16, Rank #161)
Lost a big league game to LA Galaxy Bakersfield last weekend and are now fighting for their life to earn promotion to Silver. Originally, pool play was in their home city but now will have to travel to Upland.

International FC Fuego (Bronze West, 2-4-3, GF: 25, GA: 31, Rank #233)
Got walloped in league play 11-1 last week. I really don't see any way that they sneak through.

Newcastle United (Bronze Delta, 2-8-1, GF: 10, GA: 27, Rank #236)
Will be fighting for second place.

Prediction: 1) Valencia United AC, 2) International FC Fuego, 3) Newcastle United

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AO
Location: IE Surf Complex, San Bernadino (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
IE Surf Premier RB (Gold, 3-6-3, GF: 20, GA: 22, Rank #15)
An early dark horse pick to compete for the title in the Gold division, IE Surf Premier has had rocky go of things this season. Their goal differential is not bad but they are +8 against BYSC Corona alone. They should have little trouble winning this pool, but it will be interesting to see how two of the better bronze teams stack up against them.

La Mirada FC (Bronze Central, 9-0-1, GF: 44, GA: 6, Rank #101)
Undefeated in league play and 17-1-4 since May. They have played even with SCSDL Flight 2 teams. If they can keep the game against IE Surf to a three goal loss or less they did good.

Celtic St. Patrick (Bronze East, 11-0-1, GF: 54, GA: 2, Rank #94)
This is where I think the seeding for League Cup is off. You have two of the top seeded bronze level teams and where do you place them? In a three team pool with one of the top seeds. Yes, they get a bye into the second round but they would have a much better chance of going deeper had they played in the first round and advanced to a pool without such a good team like many of the other bronze teams did.

Prediction: 1) IE Surf Premier RB, 2T) La Mirada, 2T) Celtic St. Patrick

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AQ
Location: San Bernadino Complex
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
CCU Socal Academy (Gold, 3-4-3, GF: 10, GA: 17, Rank #34)
They've settled into the mid 30s for rankings and have two wins against top 50 teams. They are not big, but are very technical and can be pretty to watch when they start stringing passes together. Most of their fire power is on defense. They should win this pool but Albion OC will give them a scare if they aren't careful.

Palm Desert SC (Silver South, 2-6-3, GF: 14, GA: 25, Rank #145)
They beat Albion OC, 3-2 back in June in the Surf City Cup. They have struggled in league play and may have a chance to come in second place in this pool.

Albion OC (Bronze South, 10-0-2, GF: 62, GA: 8, Rank #79)
Had a dominated first half of league play and fought off some scrappy teams in second half of league play. This will be a huge jump in class for them and look for them to struggle against CCU Socal. Probably second place in this pool.

Prediction: 1) CCU Socal Academy, 2) Albion OC, 3) Palm Desert SC

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AR
Location: Eagle Glen Park, Corona (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
BYSC Corona United (Gold, 0-8-4, GF: 7, GA: 24, Rank #39)
They've had a tough go of it in the Gold division. They seem to be more competitive, concentrating more on defense of late with ties against Eagles, Rangers and SoCal Academy. They have a good draw with a weaker Silver team. The toughest competition could come from South Bay United.

Fullerton Rangers Blue (Silver South, 2-4-4, GF: 13, GA: 19, Rank #138)
The formula for advancing for Fullerton and South Bay United will be to play Corona to a scoreless tie and then beat each other.

South Bay United (Bronze West, 9-1-0, GF: 52, GA: 8, Rank #108)
Cake walked through an easy first round of pool play last weekend. Will be a big underdog against Corona but they are probably favorites to come in second. Will give Corona a good game though.

Prediction: 1) BYSC Corona United, 2) South Bay United, 3) Fullerton Rangers Blue

Continued in next post.........

Rest of games..........

Pool AU
Location: Wood Ranch, Simi Valley (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
Simi Valley Eclipse (Silver-Elite North, 6-0-4, GF: 20, GA: 3, Rank #68)
At their best when playing a physical game. Silver-Elite North is not that strong so their record is a little over inflated as they found themselves losing to Silver teams during tournament play. They do get to play at home and play strong defense, but could be ripe for an upset.

IE Surf Lara (Silver South, 9-1-1, GF: 27, GA: 14, Rank #90)
A solid but pretty inconsistent team. Just when you think they turned the corner by knocking off highly touted NHB Black for their first loss, they turn around and get blasted by Legacy FC 4-0 losing their grasp on the Silver South title. They could win this group.

Apple Valley Storm (Bronze Delta, 9-0-1, GF: 38, GA: 6, Rank #131)
They've had a good run and like the other teams in this pool have succeeded through defense, but are likely on the outside looking in. I could easily see the sole wild-card coming out of this pool with a 1-0-1 record.

Prediction: 1) IE Surf Lara, 2) Simi Valley Eclipse, 3) Apple Valley Storm

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AV
Location: IE Surf Complex, San Bernadino (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
Coachella Valley Desert Storm (Silver-Elite South, 4-6-1, GF: 24, GA: 24, Rank #61)
They play in the tough (black and blue) Silver-Elite South division which should have helped prep them for a run in League Cup. The draw couldn't be better and they will make mence meat of this pool, punching their ticket to the Sweet 16.

Valley United Garcia (Silver North, 0-7-2, GF: 3, GA: 61, Rank #200)
This team is struggling badly at the Silver level. They may be able to give Oxnard Wave a game, but odds are they lose both games.

Oxnard Wave (Bronze Beta, 5-6-1, GF: 36, GA: 23, Rank #203)
They should beat Valley United but probably don't have the defense to play Coachella Valley to a tie.

Prediction: 1) Coachella Valley Desert Storm, 2) Oxnard Wave, 3) Valley United Garcia

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AX
Location: Santiago Charter Track Field, Orange (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
OC Premier Orange (Silver-Elite South, 7-2-1, GF: 24, GA: 14, Rank #54)
Currently in first in the Silver-Elite South which is quite a feat. They have a huge league game against IE Surf MB/SB West the day before so they could be a little tired. But they don't have very far to travel and the competition not all that tough. They are strong favorites to advance.

LA Galaxy CVU Blue (Silver North, 5-5-0, GF: 22, GA: 17, Rank #104)
A tough weekend for them. Will be coming off a game against SC Antelope out in Lancaster the day before and then a long drive to Orange for pool play games. They started the season 5-0 and have since lost every game.

YASC Spartans FC Black (Bronze East, 7-2-3, GF: 40, GA: 11, Rank #132)
Won the tie-breaker to get out of Pool AI. They will give LA Galaxy CVU a good game but will fall short in the end.

Prediction: 1) OC Premier Orange, 2) LA Galaxy CVU Blue, 3) YASC Spartans Black

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AY
Location: Chaffey High School, Ontario (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
Greater LB Mamnoon (Silver-Elite North, 1-10-0, GF: 6, GA: 35, Rank #172)
Got their only win of the season so far last week, a 1-0 victory over LA Premier. This is by far the weakest 2nd round pool and any of these three teams could advance.

Celtic Harps (Silver South, 6-4-1, GF: 19, GA: 30, Rank #168)
They've beaten the teams they are suppose to beat, but have yet to notch a good win. Sadly since this bracket is so even you could see a wild-card come from here especially if two teams end up with 1-0-1 records.

Fram Taylor (Bronze West, 7-3-1, GF: 28, GA: 14, Rank #188)
This is an incredibly lucky draw for them. A better bronze team might be favored to win this pool. As it is they are probably just a notch worse than the other two teams and won't advance.

Prediction: 1) Celtic Harps, 2) Fram Taylor, 3) Greater LB Mamnoon

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool AZ
Location: El Roble Jr High School, Claremont (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
Claremont Stars Black (Silver-Elite South, 4-5-2, GF: 20, GA: 22, Rank #60)
After a rough start, have gone 3-1-1 and are peaking at the right time. They will have stiff competition from SC Antelope.

SC Antelope (Silver North, 9-0-0, GF: 46, GA: 6, Rank #51)
They played a tough tournament schedule that tuned them up for league play and they have done great. Will be an epic battle between them and Claremont Stars Black.

Moorpark Utd FC (Bronze Beta, 10-0-2, GF: 63, GA: 6, Rank #120)
One of the better bronze teams, but unfortunately for them they drew one of the top three round two pools. These two games will be great measuring sticks and development tools for their team.

Prediction: 1) Claremont Stars Black, 2) SC Antelope, 3) Moorpark Utd FC

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool BA
Location: La Canada HS - JV, La Canada (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
LA Premier FC (Silver-Elite North, 1-7-1, GF: 2, GA: 28, Rank #179)
Obviously, they have had a rough go of it putting the ball in the back of the net. I don't see them advancing.

Oxnard United SC (Silver Alpha, 9-2-0, GF: 29, GA: 3, Rank #50)
The clear favorites in this pool as long as they aren't missing shots wide. Got off to a roaring 8-0 start with 0 goals allowed but have come a bit down to earth. Will bring a bruising midfield and stellar defensive line, along with one of the best GKs in the age group into this pool.

Barcelona California Red (Bronze Gamma, 8-1-1, GF: 25, GA: 6, Rank #187)
They survive by playing tough defense and their defense will need to be at their best this weekend. They should have a good low scoring game against LA Premier.

Prediction: 1) Oxnard United, 2T) LA Premier FC, 2T) Barcelona California Red

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool BB
Location: IE Surf Complex, San Bernadino (2nd Round Pool Play)
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
IE Surf HF West (Silver-Elite South, 2-8-0, GF: 13, GA: 28, Rank #74)
Even though they currently sit in last in SE-South they are a pretty decent team. They do have a tough matchup against Futbol Foundations.

Futbol FSC Correa (Silver North, 9-2-0, GF: 44, GA: 9, Rank #66)
A solid team that will be moving up to Silver Elite next season. Their best player plays center fullback but if they are in need of a goal will move up top.

HDYSL Rage FC (Bronze Delta, 8-2-0, GF: 36, GA: 9, Rank #142)
Not an easy draw as both teams are probably out of reach for them. Will be outmatched by the level of intensity from Futbol Foundations.

Prediction: 1T) Futbol FSC Correa, 1T) IE Surf HF West, 3) HDYSL Rage FC

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pool BC
Location: El Roble Jr HS, Claremont
Date: SU NOV 6

Teams:
Hollywood FC White (Silver-Elite North, 4-5-1, GF: 17, GA: 20, Rank #118)
Will be slight underdogs to Claremont Stars in this pool.

Claremont Stars 5 V Two (Silver-Elite South, 3-7-0, GF: 9, GA: 20, Rank #81)
A scrappy team from a tough division. A tough defense can shut them down but they can do the same. Will be a dog fight with Hollywood FC.

BYSC Corona United White (Bronze Central, 8-1-2, GF: 34, GA: 6, Rank #148)
They have some pretty good size on their roster and will likely be within a goal or two of both teams.

Prediction: 1) Claremont Stars 5 V Two, 2) Hollywood FC White, 3) BYSC Corona United White

That is beyond cool Tango. Awesome. Now let's hear from some of these teams that we don't get to hear about too often. This is a 2004 forum for ALL teams. Any lurkers out there, come out of the woodworks and give us your takes or inside scoops.

Our scores:
6-0 Celtic St. Patrick
4-0 La Mirada FC

Didn't see the morning game, but made it home from Camarillo just in time to watch the La Mirada game.

La Mirada looked to play simple but the ball movement was our best friend in spreading them out. They would have had a chance in one of the other groupings, just a bad draw for them.

Based on scores reported...

Claremont Stars Black are through in Group AZ as predicted, along with
Oxnard United in Group BA as predicted.

All other pools (IE Surf through above post) are still only partially reported.

Strange games with the short 25 minute halves.

IE Surf will win this......again. Outside of the of the Gold division there is a Major dropoff of talent level. This was a very good concept a few years ago.

Does Oxnard have a shot?

We'll see. With 25 minute halves and some good defensive teams in the mix they could easily get shutdown. Better practice their PKs. :)

Last year the IE Surf 03 girls had some blowouts, some close ones, and some lucky ones. League Cup is fun because everyone truly has a shot, the fields, the winds, the short halves, it really makes for factors that even the playing field.

For our IE Surf girls it's more games to keep putting into play the ball movement and space recognition the coach is teaching the girls. Winning it is fun no doubt, but not going to be easy.

I would bet on IE Surf Premier and Fullerton Rangers in the finals.

Rangers have won three consecutive League Cups (as 04/05's). I suspect they will be fighting hard to keep that streak going this year.

I think that final would be pretty intense! You never know what can happen in a format with so many elimination games......

Those are the top two seeds and two highest ranked teams, so yes it is the most likely outcome, but both teams will be tested.
