CITY SC BUYING OUT ANOTHER CLUB

City SC purchased MSA last season and now they just bought sand and surf? What's everyone's thoughts on this, are they trying to make a run at the big dogs? Legends, Surf. Also the cost for both clubs must be pretty high but cant find anything online, any ideas?

MSA wasn't really a buy out. City SC Temecula had been growing so fast around MSA. MSA was struggling to field younger team. MSA was also on the hook to the City of Murrieta for thousands of dollars monthly for a new soccer complex that will probably never get built. MSA was running out of money and needed a bailout or eventually shut down.

City SC just took them over with probably very little out of pocket.

This affiliation makes little sense. S&S is a small niche club in the South Bay. It attracts local players who really are casual club players (IMO). They also do not attract higher level players or hold onto them. And, S&S is such a local based club they are able to get priority on accessing the fields in Manhattan Beach. Will this change now being an affiliate? The city and school district may now look differently at them.

They were a very tough team when my dd played them in the youngers. I believe S & S had three future YNT players on the team we played. No way any other local niche club in the country can brag about that kind of success. It's like a nice boutique kind of country club of soccer parents. They got raided (poached) big time from Tad's Blues team, and I believe Beach got some of their players.

They were gone before they hit 12 years of age and that was over 10 years ago. S&S works out of an area that has a massive talent pool and may get those players initially.

Gone before they were 11 and yes, it was 11 years ago. Wow, time sure has gone fast. That was a hot club, as were the Original Carlsbad Lightning.

It seems they are definitely making a run at the big dogs. The press release says, "City SC South Bay becomes the 11th City SC location" so whatever that means.

This link appears to be out of date but has some of the City Affiliates.

City SC Carlsabad
City SC Central Valley
City SC San Marcos
City SC Frederick
City SC Chula Vista
City SC Utah
City SC Hawaii
City SC Southwest

Soon DPL and GA will just be City vs Surf vs Albion. How boring.
Its probably a lot less overhead for club to just pay another more well known club to use their marketing, etc.

In the end if you own a club and just want to focus on teaching soccer to kids I can see why Affiliate relationships are appealing.

Eventually if you want to play at the highest levels you'll need to implement your own branding. But why do that if staying in your own lane pays all the bills and isn't hard to manage.

One of our family friends at Sand and Surf has been told that they will have EA and GA Aspire but there will be a soon to be announced City Los Angeles that will have MLS Next and GA. Are they taking over LA Surf?

If this was to happen in GA Southwest, there would be 4 City SC teams.

CITY SC Carlsbad White
CITY SC Carlsbad Blue
CITY SC Los Angeles (former LA Surf)
CITY SC Southwest (former MSA)

There would also be Aspire/DPL CITY SC teams. That could in theory be brought up to GA.

CITY SC San Marcos
CITY SC South Bay (former Surf and Sand)
CITY SC Chula Vista

Love or hate GA + City one thing they have proven is that there was/is a market for high level soccer outside of ECNL. The other side of that coin is that girls ECNL is making a mistake not bringing CITY SC into their league. Because if the trend continues they'll just keep expanding.

I heard different.

SC’s teams on the boys side (Temecula, MV, Elsinore) were/are generally not strong. EA2 was the highest level I believe, and they rarely had a SoCal team place high in league or making deep runs in a tourney. MSA, much stronger on the boys side. Less so girls. I don’t know, but heard, that City is better on girls side.

In that way, it’s a very complimentary acquisition, and it was aimed entirely at adding MLSn in another market beyond Carlsbad. I have no info on cost, but the move took all the line coaches for MSA by surprise is what I heard. I assume it was not a cheap deal. MSA had a lot of teams.

If LA Surf became CITY SC Los Angeles this would mean theres 3 MLSN teams under the CTY SC umbrella.

CITY SC Carlsbad
CITY SC Southwest
CITY SC Los Angeles

I should have said ‘the City teams in the IE’ when I was writing about the boys teams being less strong. The Carlsbad/SM boys side is pretty solid, from what I’ve seen.

I'm not surprised, but I haven't been following the boys so I have no insight. The reason why I'm not surprised is because last summer I went to a littles boys + girls tournament and it seemed like City had 4-6 boys teams in each age group while other clubs has 1 or maybe 2. It wasn't like that 10 years ago. I have no proof other than my general observations but I'd guess this is happening because of MLSN access with the olders.

To be able to do what they've done without being in ECNL is impressive

City SC Temecula/Menifee/lake Elsinore had more than double the number of teams than MSA.

The head to head win percentage in socal league favored the City teams. Only when kids leave city teams MSA did that change for the olders.

MSA younger teams were dropping in number because City was swallowing up everything around them. The City SC rec program is huge which is where the youngers are being recruited from.

Looks like City SC pissed off someone in the merger because the owners of the rec program ended their contract with City SC and took the league independent forming LAKE SC.

Lake SC has priority for fields in Lake Elsiniore and Canyon Lake.
