Our new Pope Leo has Cajun roots. One Louisiana writer (Rod Dreher) has already called him a "coonass". Can't get more Cajun than that.

Saw that, wasn't aware of the word, but apparently back in 1981 the Louisiana State Legislature condemned the word as offensive. Legislators not only condemned it, they outlined the word’s etymology" as coming from the French word connasse, which means "dirty wh--- or stupid person.

If you enter "connasse" into the online translator below you will get the result I am more familiar with. Also interesting is the result for "conasse". On the 6th Grade school bus I wasn't sure what the spelling was because I was just hearing the French-Canadian kids speak it, but I gathered the meaning from the mixed-language context.
