First year team (Milan) thus our first State Cup, playing Governers. So far so good. We played at Del Mar, fields were good. Parking wasn't too bad. Had some really bad pizza Saturday night at Urban Pi, which is similar to Pieology, but not as good, and more expensive.

We won all three of our games, with the best team that we played being the South Slammers FC, a tier 2 team. We had our best half of the year in the first half as everything clicked and we took a 2-0 half time lead. Coach put in his daughter, the backup keeper in place of mine to get her some playing time as she is coming back from injury and missed most of the year. Slammers scored early to pull to 2-1, so he pulled her out. Felt bad for her as she has missed the whole year (she did get some good playing time in the next two games and my daughter got to finally play the field at striker as well so everything worked out). No real challenges after that and we ended up winning 2-1. Took next two games 2-0 and 2-0, so now we get to go to Lancaster next weekend. o_O

Enjoy the hellish drive to Lancaster. My 18 year old still talks about those trips up the mountain. Lots of singing and talking about soccer. Thinking back that is as good as this ride gets. Sure college scholarships and national championships are nice but those are the moments that bind you and your kiddo. Don't look past them!!

We played in Lanaster this past weekend with a noon game on Saturday and a 9 am and 1:30 pm game on Sunday.
I expected it to be much worse. The hotel Saturday night was what we expected for a Comfort Inn in Lancaster. If the rooms didn't smell so smokey, it would have exceeded expectations.
The wind was non-existent and the temperatures were pretty good.
We had team meals at Yard House and BJs pizza.
The drive was long, but very easy. No traffic to speak of going out on Saturday morning or back on Sunday.
I hope you have a similar experience.

Freedom FC beat LAGSD Gold 2-1 and beat IE Surf West Fraschetti 3-1

The Galaxy SD team has some big physical girls on their team. It was a fun game to watch with two pretty evenly matched teams.

So we (Freedom) win our third game against Strikers North 3-1 to set up and interesting matchup against LA Galaxy Southbay Gold. Looks to be two of the top flight 2 SCDSL teams going head to head....

We beat every team below us in the rankings until losing to a team above us in the rankings in Governer's. 6 games total. All games decided by 1 goal. I will say it is soccer and anything can and usually does happen.

We were in Lancaster this past weekend. We won our first game 2-1 on Saturday, beating a team just below us. Referee had some issues with their parents, always interesting. Had a girl that was smacked in the head, laying on the ground, and the referee is over jawing with their parents, ignoring our injured player. Crazy.

Sunday we played OVC, great parents from this team. Chatted, very friendly. Wind was 15 MPH and the field was downhill on one side so made for a crazy game. Tied at 1 it went to penalty kicks. To all you keeper parents penalty kicks are the worst. After 5 kicks it was 2-2. Ended up going to 8 kicks for both teams. We ended up winning 3-2. First time for my daughter to experience penalty kicks as a keeper. Didn't expect her to have to save 6 out of 8.

Sunday afternoon played the Aztecs. Solid team. No score until 10 minutes left in the game, Aztecs score and end up winning 1-0. Ball was pinballing around at about the 12 yard mark until one of their girls scored to the left side of the net. Our girls need to learn to just kick it as hard as they can out of there, any direction away from the keeper. Kids received best trophy they could ever get afterwards, cupcakes. :)

Noticed that a 16 girl roster wasn't enough. One girl sprained ankle didn't play, another left for Mexico over the weekend on vacation leaving us 14. Another girl was out with sore feet. Left us with 13, which then would drop to 12 or 11 as some girl would get hurt during the game. We didn't score a goal in the 2nd half of any of those 3 games. Crazy to think 18 might be needed on the team.

The girls and the parents all enjoyed State Cup. First year together, made it to 16, plus had lots of fun. Looks like 95% of the team will stay together so we keep building and working on improving as we move up to Silver next year.

I scanned some of the results the other day and noticed the same thing. Teams in the low 100's advancing over teams in the top 50. It's why they play the game!

Welcome to the world of being a keeper parent. Your daughter AND you have to let EVERY goal go. They are going to get scored on. Saving 6 out of 8 deserves a standing ovation. Excellent!!! Congrats to your daughter. Good luck on the fields.

Thanks. The other girls lifted my daughter up and carried her off the field as they understood the magnitude of what had occurred. I made sure to tape my mouth shut to make sure I didn't say a word to her during the penalty kicks. Really enjoyed the sportsmanship between her and the other keeper as they high-fived each other after each kick.

I try to sit at the opposite end of the field; that way if I can't keep my mouth shut she still can't hear me. I love to hear about good sportsmanship. Best of luck.

Don't know anything about the Santa Barbara team in the finals, but we played the Apple Valley team twice in our division, and twice earlier when our team was first starting out in a tournament. First two games weren't pretty as we lost something like 3-0 and 4-0. They have very good athletes, play a lot of long ball, not much possession.

During league we made some adjustments to our defense, pushed our defensive line up to get the offside, plus had my daughter at keeper start playing higher up outside the 18, allowing her to clear many of the balls that came over the top. This resulted in two games of 1-1 ties. They will be moving up to at least Silver next year.

Should be two very competitive games, I'm leaning towards seeing So Cal Academy vs FC Golden State in the final.

As most thought from the start, I think this is So Cal Academy's tourney to lose.... With that said, it's still soccer so anything can happen.... good luck to all four teams!

I think CRL really helped FCGS in playing against tougher competition. Should serve them well in being competitive should they make it to the finals.

    My 2 cents...
