From SCDSL website: "The push for the playoffs is on! Playoffs are for the 2004 and older age groups. Due to limitations on field space at Silverlakes and the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park all teams will NOT qualifiy. Push to finish no lower than 3rd place in your bracket! The final format should be relased soon."

This teaser approach to revealing important information for parents and players is more than annoying. And damn those exclamation points. Do they seriously think it is in any way exciting for us to hear that the majority of SCDSL teams may not get playoff games this year because the league failed to secure enough fields?

Why is everything so damn last minute?
If you have a playoff format that only lets in the top 3 teams from each division, they say it in August.

If there is a shortage of fields why do we need to have Tier 2 and Tier 3 playoffs at the older ages? How about just have a Champions and Europa group. What incentive do you have to work to get into the champions group or Tier 1, just play down to get into the playoffs

It was. DOC’s voted to have the league go into November (5th) and to not have everyone make the playoffs.

The committee presented to the group to have playoffs start Oct 28th with most everyone making it.

The group wanted less Saturday and Sunday games, go to November (5th) and only upper teams make playoffs.

    That’s what you got.

I believe they started the playoffs last year? And did away with showcase events for the older ages.
10 game season plus playoffs is how I understood things. If you do well, you'll get 14 games. If not, you get 11 games.
Now some teams will wind up playing 10 games.
Some will say "if you aren't in the top 3, then you don't belong in the playoffs." Probably true.
But there are some teams that tested themselves by playing in a flight that is higher than they should be playing. And will not finish top 3. But with playoffs, they would have been seeded against the upper teams from the lower flight. This sort of helps to confirm which flight you should have been in. If they have close games agains the flight 3 teams, they should have played in flight 3. If they have blowout wins against the top flight 3 teams, then they were in the right spot in flight 2.
And there are other teams that purposely stayed in a lower flight to rack up wins. Or didn't realize how good they were going to be. There's 4 teams (out of 8 brackets) in g04 that are undefeated with over 30 goals scored and less than 8 goals allowed each. Should they have been flight 1? I assume they'll be playing against flight 1 teams (top 3) in the playoffs. Probably would have been a better move to have them play the bottom end of flight 1 to get a handle on where they truly fit.

Did we get a discount on our fees, for fewer games, this year?

    That was rhetorical.

I think it's cheaper to play in Coast. And play more games. And have most 2nd year teams playing in the right division. Something to consider.

Be careful what you wish for, if you think it's "cheaper" to travel to Apple Valley, Palm desert and Lancaster playing in CSL Bronze

So many teams are you talking about? Brackets of 8 instead of 16?

It's fine to say teams have to earn their way into playoffs but it sounds like they are treating each division as the same, whether it be Champions, a geographically-organized Flight 1 Europa division, or a lower tier division. That makes no sense. If you are going to treat the fall season as a tournament then it should be organized as a tournament (with balanced pools).

Consider the current SoCal YSR rankings for each of the current 3rd place teams at the '02 level:

    Champions: 25
    Europa East: 58
    Europa South: 28
    Europa West: 72
    Flt 2 East: 140
    Flt 2 North: 77
    Flt 2 South: 159
    Flt 2 West: 100
    Flt 3: 164

(This is not to suggest YSR is 100% accurate. I'm just highlighting the relative disparity that can occur among the divisions.)

And to be clear, I don't actually believe SCDSL should be reorganized as a tournament. The steel sharpening steel approach is best for fall league. Those teams in Champions and Europa South are lucky to have had league games against such good teams. But to turn around and say the 4th or 5th place teams in those divisions haven't earned a playoff spot is a bit much.

Read the email that started the post. "Format should be released soon". Meaning it's still not certain if its top 3 or top 4 from every group that advance. They didn't plan on doing it this way but after DOCs voted in late summer to not have bottom teams play consolation games they've been working on it since.

When when was the vote? Why would any DOC advocate for less games?

I guess this is the official admission from the SCDSL that they failed at the "Development " part.

Too funny. I recall when the league was first formed and parents were all in on the idea of development. Now it seems that the parents are more concerned with playoffs and medals. And we wonder why the USMNT failed...
