Slammers AW advances. It's still early but CB coached that team all year. CB coached teams going for 3 peat. 4 Final in last 4 years. Maybe something to it

Must say I was a little disappointed with both Slammers and Surf today. Surf didn’t look their usual self possessing the ball and almost looked tired/nervous. Although they tried to stick to their style, it was harder for them to break down Slammers. I still appreciate the way surf tries to play though and think they’re a joy to watch.

Slammers on the other hand played very direct and looked to turn the game into a scrappy physical battle which certainly disrupted Surf’s game. It looked very much like an old Strikers and CB style of playing, putting the ball into areas, turning the team, and looking to capitalize on mistakes.

Either way these are easily the two top teams in the state and this was the National Cup Final in my opinion. Both team deserved to be in the final but unfortunately the luck of PK’s had to decide it today.

    Just my two cense...

I wonder why Cal South had a tough time seeding the Slammers. They didn’t play CRL but anyone paying attention knew this was the 2017 National Cup champs. I think there was also some confusion with the 06 slammers squads as well.

I guess when you have 6 teams in a single age group, it might be hard to figure out who is playing where. Especially with club passing.

yes, this was CB 2017 with new adds. anytime you have good on good like this and there is the pressure of a 1-1 tie late the game can get a bit rough but I thought both teams played well and no doubt those two teams showed why they are at the top of the pecking order. Congrats to both teams for a well fought game.

Just for fun, and I know it’s always a interesting topic within youth development and something we overlook at this “must win” time of the year but who do you think will be the better team at U16 (when it really matters)?

Cal South seeds teams based on CRL standings after the summer CRL standings. Silly but its what is done. Slammers doesn't play CRL so they get a lower seeding, a dumb reality. Seeds 1-4 should of been Surf Slammers LAGSB and Blues. Tough to argue against that seeding.

    Congrats to final four.

Three years from now who knows how many of the same girls will be on the same team. SD Surf and LAFC both put out quality teams, both put girls in college and on National Team flip a coin. Why does winning at U16 really matter?

your correct- 1/3 may have stopped playing, 1/3 will be on a different team and maybe 1/3 are still playing together. Its about your DD development vs. who has the better team. Yes we all like to win and be competitive and this time of year puts a spotlight on that but many things will change from now to U16.

My 2 pesos. When does winning ever matter in the big big picture? answer never. But in the prism of sports its measured on a scoreboard and we all accept that as part of the deal. Learning how to win is developing too. When they are little the parents sometimes are more worried about the wins and losses than the kids. They are old enough at 16 to understand the correlation between work and reward. At age 16 If they have been developed as far as how to play and hone skills sometimes it just comes down to gut and grit. So that is where you find out what you have. That is what will get you to the next level. You can have all the talent in the world but you dont have heart then it is useless. And that is why winning counts at 16.

Sorry I probably should clarify. I meant who will be the better team / individuals at U16 when it really matters with college coaches looking at the teams and players.

I don’t think winning in youth soccer is ever the priority. I think if you asked 99% of the girls playing if they could win ever National Cup or go to the college or their choice I know they’ll pick college of their choice.

From what I’ve seen this year, Surf seems to have a clear development pathway and plan for their players and you can clearly see the same playing style from their 2007s up to their 2003s (across different coaches). I don’t see that many other clubs in So Cal trying to at least do the same thing across all ages.

Right now Surf has a couple of players that can muscle their way to the goal. I thought this was going to give them the advantage in Nationals. It will be fun to watch the development of both teams to see their style after puberty.

I was hoping for an all San Diego final but Slammers are on a roll. Anyone see the game today? I was expecting Slammers to win but not an ass whooping.

Brookfield 1-0 over Galaxy? Wow! That's unexpected. Any given Sunday (or Saturday in this case) I suppose. Anyone with the story behind this?

I will qualify my summary with the fact that I know very little about soccer tactics (not my game growing up).

This was not the best soccer game to watch...a lot of "kick ball" from both sides. Surf B let the center backs for South Bay dictate the flow of the game. This was the same approach that led to a 1-1 first half score in bracket play. A free kick was awarded to Surf just outside of the box before half (1-0). Galaxy had quite a few free kicks themselves (from similar spots) but were unable to put one in the back of the net. Surf B stayed with their defensive approach in the second half. I was surprised to see this strategy work on the big field. I assumed that eventually both the width and the length of the field would yield a goal to a very talented and skilled Galaxy team. I was also watching Blues Holley (06) use a similar approach on the small field and there was very little space to connect passes.

Anyhow a great run so far for Surf's 2nd team, scary game tomorrow for them :)

Moving forward, Surf B prefers (appropriately at this point) to be called Surf A. :)

Just messaged her. Sounds like it was a frustrating game. Wish we could have been there to support (we were definitely considering it), but Galway Downs is quite a drive.

I'm guessing odds are in Slammers' favor to win it all now - no disrespect to the Brookfield team of course.
