It's nothing new that a lot of players drop soccer their Junior and Senior years.
I've noticed a little bit of a trend this year though. Players are still interested in playing, but they've taken a part time job. In years past, it seemed that employers were sensitive to teenage schedules and would work around them when possible.
I've heard the following stories lately:
1. I would love to play. But my job says if I take off more than 1 weekend per month, they'll fire me.
2. I would love to play, but at my job we only staff (the ice cream store/retail store) with 1 person. We don't have enough employees to let me start late/end early/take a 2 hour break for a game.
3. I have to be at a mandatory training for the next 3 Sunday's and I won't be able to play those days.
4. I'm scheduled to work on Monday and Wednesday for the next 2 months. I won't ever be able to make it to practice.
5. Somewhat unrelated to work, but speaks to the overscheduling of hs kids- "I am meeting with my college guidance counselor every Saturday to write essays. So I can't play."
Couple these with many games being played that require a 1 hour + drive- There's a lot of girls that should still be playing.
Soccer sure isn't everything and work experience is valuable. But my feeling is that these kids will have the rest of their lives to work. (And I realize not everyone can afford the cost of a teenager not having a job- My parents made me work, but the places I worked were always able to work around my schedule)
Back in my day (100 years ago)- I worked, played 3 sports, had decent grades and a pretty fun social life.
