2006 - ODP Player Pool

My coach emailed our team the names and said he didn't even know they did ODP for this age group but congratulated the kids who made it. He also said he had Zero involvement.

My daughter made it as well. Very happy for her but didn't know anything about it so it's nice to come in here and learn a little bit.

Question time!

My daughter is on this list, so this thread is very relevant for me.

Why does ODP seem to have a poor reputation here?

How much is the camp where they send the kids who survive cuts?

From what I have seen, they tend to pick the bigger girls. A lot of smaller but very skilled girls don't make the cut. Also it is very political.

If that was the case, how many players did the beach coach nominated? "1".
Not true they had multiple scouts at bracket play at Galway downs. It is not coach nominations. It is a small sample size hence many deserving players not represented. These girls are babies. The top players will all be seen at some point especially with academy coming into play. The next U14 boys national camp will have 30 of the 32 players in camp affiliated with an academy.

OK we can agree to disagree. No big deal your daughter making or not making this first list will have no impact whatsoever on her future in the game

As someone who has been through this:
1. They miss a lot of girls
2. Alpha parents who think their DD deserve it and don't get it call crying to SH and magically appear at Ventura- fact
3: it's a money grab. You pay to go to Ventura and guess what it's not special! Enjoy the day if you want but it's not
4. ODP is worthless once your DD hits U13 academy so enjoy it now because she can't do it then and no one says or cares about u10 or u11 soccer in the big picture (I.E. you can't put it on your resume)
5. Coaches nominate- fact. Coaches do it a lot- fact. And it's not with good intentions. If I am not even in your age group and see B teams over represented there is a scam
6. If you have a special DD go to the ODP camp it's a heck of a lot more fun, better training and guess what? People who they like have a shot at being on the regional team
7. Your girls are YOUNG. The fact that this is even happening is shocking but shows SH and CH level of despartion to remain relevant and the easiest prey is a ulittle parent
8. The fact that BW is a scout should show you the level of "skill and talent" the ODP scouts are. Hint- they aren't.

Not only are you correct they account for 10-12 of the girls who show up at Ventura.
Do you think these parents call SH? Unfortunately some do but more often than not it's the DOC after the "star" at the club got overlooked.
Happens alllllll the time.
Politics in full force

Sorry to break the news to everyone, but DOC's also call US Soccer head coaches and scouts to evaluate a player for their YNTs. In some cases DOC's ask for a favor to include a player at a camp, even if it means she is cycled out afterwards. It's how some clubs build parent loyalty at their club.

Girls academy doesn't start till U14 which will be 2004s next year. These girls are two years away

Small point - yes. Again though an accolade that is meaningless. Also beware because Lots of high level coaches don't allow you to miss CRL or tourneys for the day in Ventura.
Again if you are who they want it doesn't matter anyway and you go to ODP camp for free (which is the goal)

For the record some coaches recently got smacked down for that practice ....

I wouldn't say it's a small point considering there is a U14 girls national team that is participating in ODP regional tournaments. There is definitely an affiliation in terms of the pool of players currently until girls academy gets up and running. Then you are right I foresee it being similar to the boys where the majority of players attending these camps are coming from academy programs.

Are you not aware that DA Can't compete in ODp?
You can choose but you can't do both.
ODP inter regional completely different ball of wax.
I assume you are a ulittle parent- don't fret too much it all will change in two years anyway

I am well aware of that. You aren't seeing my point. The point is that until academy starts for girls at U14 next year the players that are on the current U14 national team have ODP affiliations and will continue to until they mirror the boys and have a U12 academy in place

By the way I have an older academy player and am aware of how things work

I do as well- and if you do you also know they have no intention of going below u14 and we had to fight to get 2004 with their own academy. It took eight years to get proliferation at the u12 level and I can guarantee it won't happen by the time these girls are ready for academy.
And yes I am absolutely not seeing your points at all because you seem like an ODP homer which is odd because if you are in academy you know it's worthless

Settle down man I am in no way an ODP homer just trying to have a dialogue. Not saying there will be a U12 girls academy either in the near future. They will be U12 next year so obviously won't happen for them. What I am saying is that I would venture to guess a large % of the players on the current U14 girls national team likely have gone through the ODP process in some capacity. I totally agree they miss a number of worthy players and at this age it is next to meaningless but it does provide some exposure.
