What clubs are known for their GK Trainers?

Are there any clubs that have well respected GK trainers and great GK training programs? It always seems that the GK Trainers that are "well known" and more effective are the ones you have to pay for outside of club. Which clubs tend to have really great in-house GK trainers?

One caveat to your question I'd add is that even some of the better GK trainers that work for programs might just be contractors hired to do sessions with the GKs (as opposed to being on the coaching staff). The contractors will just do sessions and won't show up to games to coach or observe the goalkeeper (usually because they have their own gigs/private trainings/camps going on for Saturdays/Sundays). The contractors will therefore have a lot less influence with the coaches (since they won't be at the coaching meetings) or input on how the goalkeeper is used. My son's first year experience was with coaches on staff (but they rotated through 4 of them). My son's experience with United was with a contractor (who was really good but never spoke to his coach).

What Grace said is correct and applied to my DD. Her favorite and long-term individual outside trainer was her first club's GK coach. But his private/group training outside of the club were soooooo much better than the "free" club sessions that we quit doing the club sessions in favor of just paying him for his private training (which was group training, not one on one). The clubs often don't coordinate very well with their contracted GK coaches and that was the case with this guy. He had no pull with the club or coaches when it came to developing the keepers, so his club sessions were always a mish-mash of ages and ability levels, and they often moved him from field to field and changed the days of the training, so it was always hit or miss. But with his own outside sessions, he controlled the curriculum and locations and who was in which group, so the training was much more effective. So, we learned that even if your club has a "great" GK trainer, it still might not work well for your player.

What area do you live in, and how far are you willing to travel?

Santa Monica United has Ian Feuer, who is excellent. They currently do three sessions divided by age groups, but as others note, the quality varies greatly compared to his private group training where he can group people himself. It isn't divided by level beyond age, although weaker keepers tend to skip because his training is high level. He does talk with coaches and sometimes does scheduled walk-arounds to team practices, but he doesn't come to games (would be hard with 40+ teams - at most you would get 1 game a season unless he used assistants). It's not perfect, but SMU has often had GKs come to te club specifically for Ian, especially at older ages for GKs looking to play in college and needing playing time and high quality instruction and college GK coach connections

It seems like the clubs are getting so big that the GK groups are out of hand. I Have seen a few clubs where it looks like all ages train together which looks like a mess and no teaching, just training. I saw a few where the GK coach seperate by ages and they were out there for like 3 or sessions with lower numbers. I am sure it may be a cost issue but it seems so much better to have less to learn then more to just work

Slammers is all in the OC though right? I won't eliminate the need to have to drive that far when she's older. I've heard some college coaches prefer their future recruits play on certain clubs and if we get that far and she's still passionate about it, I'll do it. But I fear driving that far to practices, multiple times a week, might cause burn out (on her...and on me! ha!). Anything in the SGV?

My experience with LA Premier DA has been amazing for my DD. Their GK coach separates his training into DA two days and DPL two days a week(5-8 keepers a session). He’s also at team training and every game. He’s a fantastic trainer.

It's amazing to me that there are very few private GK trainers for elite (ECNL/DA) level players in San Diego. Our club (that-which-will-not-be-named) offers 'clinic' training, but it isn't a viable option for a number of reasons. So the only option is private. Which is expensive and logistically challenging. Finding a private trainer that is 1) available when we were able to train 2) had a good rapport with the player 3) fit in our budget and 4) really invested in the player (which takes time and consistency)...has been impossible. We did have a private trainer that was awesome - truly instrumental to developing my player from age 11-13 1/2. He relocated around the same point where my player needed a more elite oriented training program. We tried a trainer but it was hit or miss, mostly miss. So training fell by the wayside both during club season and HS for various reasons. Not training took a toll on my player. Hopefully though, we have found a new training option this summer so we will see. Suffice to say, there is definitely a gap in high level GK trainers in the central SD region if/when the club GK trainers are not a viable option.

We are fortunate that our club allows my son to train with the DA keeper coach, so it's a smaller group and very high level. We really like the trainer, but realize that he may or may not be there next season, which seems to be pretty typical from what I am reading from others. The training in general, is WAY better than our last club, where the keeper coach was different every week, sometimes it would be cancelled at the last minute, and the coach always seemed to be taking off to work with the academy.

If you haven't already tried him, my kid is fond of Guillermo Del Rio (coach for SDSC & LAGSD); you may want to give him a go. She greatly prefers the privates ($60) so she can focus on what she wants to work on versus the group trainings.
