Vocal Cord Dysfunction

Has anyone's player experienced this? It mimics an asthma attack or can also coincide with exercise induced asthma but typically inhalers do nothing to alleviate the breathing problems from VCD. I am looking for a referral for a speech therapist in the So. Cal area that works specifically with athletes and VCD? Thanks.

Yes...my DD has had some issues with breathing and some weird chest/throat things that we first went to a pulminary allergist to see. She was referred to a vocal cord specialist named Erin Walsh. She is phenomenal, not a sports specialist, but one of the experts in VCD. We are actually scheduled to see her soon. Google Erin Walsh speech therapist at UCSD. PM me if you want more info :)

My daughter had VCD. We saw Dr. Susan Holland in Pasadena. https://www.gray-holland.com/directions.html

It was a big mystery for us, but once it was diagnosed. We saw Dr. Holland and in ONE VISIT, she taught my daughter some breathing exercises to do to counteract the VCD episode. That same day, my daughter had an episode which before lasted about 1/2 hour. She did the exercise and stopped it in 30 seconds. Aside from the births of my two daughters, I have never been so happy.

Good luck!

Saw this and had to reply. The similarities btwn asthma and VCD are so similar that VCD is often overlooked. We really thought our dd would have to give up soccer bc the inhaler and other meds just didn't work. The vcd breathing exercises work and are simple to do during games. She found the ones that work best for her and no longer has breathing issues or inhalers. Norcal here so sorry I can't help with a referral.

I think my DD has a similar issue with the inhaler not really doing anything. I think it acts more like a placebo that relaxes her on occasion which in turn calms her and relaxes her breathing. What breathing exercises are working for you? I've been looking at Youtube videos but haven't started using them yet. Just wondering if you knew of any videos or descriptions of exercises that helped.

Thanks

We got our info from a specialist like the one's mentioned above. I'm reluctant to provide a treatment plan and it's difficult to communicate like this. I'd recommend making an appointment, getting a diagnosis confirming your dd has vcd, and then starting a treatment plan. Its a frustrating and sometimes scary journey. I wish her and you the best.

My DD has been dealing with the same issue. We were referred to a speech therapist but she didn’t have much experience with this condition. We are researching other speech therapists in the Los Alamitos, Cypress, Long Beach area. Anyone have any they can recommend?
