National Cup Favorites

With first weekend of National Cup in the books, I figured I start the conversation with my picks for the best National Cup teams. This is only teams in National Cup and it takes into account first week results.

1. San Diego Navy -- Strong favorite. By far the best team in the tournament. They have qualified for Nationals twice already in the last 3 weeks -- CRL and National League. Likely to do it again here. This team can beat anyone.

2. GPS Red (Crescenta Valley White) -- Discovery League champs knocked off IE Surf and Legends Corona in CRL, went undefeated in top bracket of Vegas, and tied Navy and Hawks at SCDSL Showcase. CRL Playoff loss to Navy brings this team down a notch and shows they are not at yet at Navy's level, but they can play with anyone else.

3. Slammers HB Elite -- Already qualified for Far West Regionals with second place CRL finish. Beat Hawks to get there. 2nd in Discovery League and pretty much near the top in anything they play in. This is a well balanced and very dangerous team. Question is whether they can beat the Slammers ECNL team. The answer is probably yes. One game playoff against the Slammers ECNL team for who is the ECNL team next year is a game I would travel to see.

4. IE Legends (IE Surf) -- Strong team on a little bit of a down swing. Book-ended great Vegas Invitational with losses to GPS Red and Slammers HB Elite in CRL. On the plus side, they already qualified for Nationals with Vegas showing so National Cup does not mean much for them. This team used to be Navy's equal. I don't think they are anymore.

5. Hawks -- Defending champs have fallen a notch. Still one of the top teams in the State, but a repeat would be a tough task, especially with their 6'5" goalie on the shelf. Disappointing 4th place finish in Discovery combined with failure to qualify for Nationals in either Vegas or CRL playoffs was a surprise for this powerhouse team.

6. Legends Corona (Corinthians) -- Dangerous team that is definitely on the upswing after picking up some players. In CRL Cup finals with impressive wins over Rebels and Beach Lohn. This is not a team anyone wants to play.

7. Slammers Whittier Alvarez -- 3rd in Discovery behind GPS and Slammers HB. This team can beat anyone. Highest ranked team that didn't get first round bye. Could definitely be higher. Already won two games by 9-2 margin.

8. Beach Sudyka -- Team is on the upswing after getting some players back from injury. Made CRL Cup finals with wins over IE Surf and AC Brea.

9. Orange Voetball -- Always a dangerous team. Tough shootout loss to Beach Sudyka in CRL Cup.

10. Rebels -- Well coached team with a lot of talent. Ran into a buzz saw versus the new improved Legends Corona team.

11. Beach Lohn -- Strong team, but like Rebels, they ran into hot Legends Corona team in CRL Cup. Did I mention Legends Corona is now really good.

12. AC Brea -- This team has been near the top for several years. They've never been able to take the next step, but they are always good.

13. Slammers FC SM -- Strong Discovery League Team could surprise people. 2nd Slammers team in the top 15.

14. Murrieta Surf -- Champions division winner always plays tough. Had a tough SCDSL showcase against Navy, GPS, and Hawks, but that was expected. Hopefully, the high level opponents were a great warm up for this tough team.

15. LAGSB Elite -- 2 wins with 8-1 differential already. Runners up in Champions Division. Another team no one wants to play.

16. Legends DPL -- Best of the DPL teams is still no where near the top. This team could surprise though.

17. San Diego Strikers -- Tough team with decent CRL showing and first round bye.

18. San Diego Academy Orange -- Navy B team is still better than most. Managed to tie Hawks 1-1 in Discovery League Play. Definitely not your average B team.

19. Real So Cal Santa Clarita -- Another team that has been good for a while. They just have never been really good. They always seem to lose their top players, which will keep them from ever being elite.

20. South Slammers Elite -- One more Slammers team that could win some games.

21. Olimpus FC -- Strong team that often surprises its opponents. Would not be shocked to see them in the final 16.

22. San Diego Force -- tough 2 tie start, but this team should still advance and can definitely win some games. This is a Discovery team that had some good SCDSL games and finished in the top half of the bracket. Win over Slammers HB Elite highlighted this team's season. Would be ranked much higher if not for the rough start.

23. CZ Elite -- This team was a top 10 team for years. That run is definitely over. With their fantastic coach seemingly spending more time out of the country than in it, plus several top players moving on, this team is definitely a sinking ship.

24. South Slammers JC -- Another dangerous Slammers team. How many are there?

25. Blues Helm -- The fact that this is the highest ranked Blues team is a big surprise. Blues just has too many other good teams between ECNL and Academy. Can the Helm team represent the Blue name.

Good summary! That said I think it's questionable to count the SCDSL showcase scores as representative of teams strength. Those were truly meaningless games and few if any college scouts.

It's also hard for the teams that have already clinched Nationals or FWR spots to "bring it". Perhaps that's what happened with IE Legends?

Heard there was movement from ie legends not sure if that might be why the latest outcomes. From what I heard 4 players or so moved clubs.

Yup, 5 girls went to Arsenal 03 ECNL right after High School season wrapped up.

Gotta hurt a team no matter how deep or strong. Gotta assume they were all key players. Best of luck to all the young ladys still there as well as the ones on there new journey.

Good stuff, thanks for posting. My DD team is in this mix so fun to read. From what I've seen this season I'd be very surprised if the National Cup finalist come from outside your top 6 listed teams. Regardless, best of health and luck to all teams!

Thanks for the review. It looks pretty good. I think Navy is number 1 and your entire top 7 is spot on, though I might move a few teams up or down 1 or 2 spots among that top 7, it is well done.

You had 25 top teams. There are 32 teams left. You only missed 3. Teams on your list that didn't make it:

#14 Murrieta Surf
#21 Olimpus
#22 SD Force

Biggest surprise is Murrieta. Anyone know what happened? Just unlucky or overrated?

Which top 16 teams on the list won't make it to next round? Who not from top 16 will advance? My vote is for CZ. They always seem to do well at National Cup.

No big upsets yet. Real SCV beat CZ yesterday. I thought CZ was going to advance. This will make it very tough for them.

Big games today -- based on rankings in this thread --

#1 Navy vs #23 CZ Elite
#2 GPS vs #7 Slammers Whittier
#5 Hawks vs #13 Slammers SM
# 6 Brea vs. #20 South Slammers Elite
#9 Oranje vs. #23 South Slammer JC
#18 SD Orange vs. Blues Helm

My picks -- all the favorites

Navy 4-0
GPS 2-1
Hawks 3-0
Brea 2-0
Oranje 2-0
SD Orange 3-1

Top 7 team have all done as expected.

Surprises in week 3:

#8 Beach Sudyka DPL is 0-1-1. They need a win against Rebels to stay alive. For those talking about DPL vs Discovery on another thread, Discovery is generally much much better than DPL.
#11 Beach Lohn upset by Santa Monica United. They now need to beat Legends DPL to stay alive
#12 Brea with 1-0 loss faces elimination unless they can pull off a win against Corona and get tiebreaker help.
#15 LAGSB Elite -- two loss almost mathematically eliminates them, but they still do have a very super small sliver of hope.

As of now, and things of course could change, but as of now, it looks like top 16 will have all of the top 16 teams except:

#8 Beach Sudyka
#11 Beach Lohn
#12 AC Brea
#13 Murietta Surf (already out)
#15 LAGSB Elite

Looks like their places will be taken by:

#17 San Diego Strikers
#18 San Diego Orange -- anybody know what the red card was for
#19 Real SCV
#20 South Slammers Elite
Unranked Santa Monica United

So pretty good ranking job as the top 7 all look in and the teams that are going to get in were ranked 17-20 with 1 unranked team. Santa Monica looks to be the Cinderella team in the Sweet 16.

Legends Corona vs one of the CDA Slammers HB teams...13-0 ?? Unless the CDA team literally sat down at some point on the pitch and flat out stopped playing its kind of a head scratcher to see a score like this at this level isn’t it? Anyone have any insight on this game? Run the score up..karma is a 8!+€#.

I noticed that too. Very strange. The review says "This is not a team anyone wants to play." Clearly Slammers HB did not want to play them today.

My DD is on the Legends Corona team. It was an unfortunate score. Respectable at 3-0 at half time. Slammers had one sub and I am not sure if the one sub was 100% or not. A lot of playing time for the far end of our bench. Some of the girls did not get the message from the coach to knock it around without attacking as Slammers began sitting back and letting the GK and defenders pass without pressure. Not sure there is anything else to say.

Well that sure clears up a lot of things. Thank you. I redact my comment regarding Karma. I just assumed your team ran the score up on them. My apologies. Good luck to your team!!

My take on what I saw and heard at Silverlakes this weekend for each group and the group leaders...

Group A - Legends IE (Surf IE)
I don't know much about the strength of teams Legends IE played this weekend but they looked a lot like them old selves - and that's not good for the rest of the field. Next they face a very good SDSC Orange team to determine 1st and 2nd of group. This should be a fun game to watch!

Group B - GPS (CVSC)
I caught 20 or so minutes of the first half of GPS vs Slammers Whittier as I was leaving. It seemed like an evenly matched game. But GPS got the win as they seem to always do and should finish 1st of group. Next game match ups should favor Slammers Whittier to advance 2nd of group.

Group C - Legends DPL
Legends squeaking into first of group with back to back 1-0 wins. SMU looked good against Beach Lohn but couldn't find that same intensity against Legends. Mathematically nothing locked up in this group. Next weekend games will determine 1st and 2nd of group for Legends, SMU and Beach.

Group D - CDA Slammers HB
One of our games was after a Slammers HB game and their parents were cool to chat with as we jousted to take their spots! Even overheard some of the Slammers HB parents talking about their team being next seasons ECNL2 team. SD Strikers is next on their schedule to determine 1st and 2nd of group.

Group E - SDSC Navy
It's SDSC Navy's tournament to win, and they know it! That expectation seems to keep them playing at a higher level than all else. Real SoCal SCV had a nice weekend with back to back wins. Their reward is a match up against SDSC Navy to determine 1st and 2nd of group.

Group F - Legends Corona (Corinthians)
Legends picked up some players for BYSC. Good for their coach on bringing them together as a team most don't want to be matched against. But their 13-0 win will be suspect for most. Legends and South Slammers on top of group with AC Brea looking first for an upset win over Legends then some tie breaker magic to go their way.

Group G - Rebels
Is this the Rebels team that will go ECNL next season? Mathematically all four teams still in it (I think). Rebels and Celtic 1888 on top but Slammers Fipps and Beach Sudyka will certainly make them earn it and possibly jump one or two of them in group.

Group H - Hawks
Group H must stand for "Hawks" as they should have no problem finishing 1st in group. The game to watch is Slammers SB Bozart vs Slammers FC SM who will be battling for 2nd of group.

Best of health & luck to all teams!

Thank you for the review. I heard the Legends Corona goalie, who never plays on the field, had a hat trick in about 15 minutes. Can't complain about running up the score when the non-field player goalie puts in 3.

Upsets? No.. most higher ranked teams advanced as expected..
Only 2 DPL teams in the field failed to qualify....Legends battled til the end, Beach laid an egg.. should be an interesting knock out round and DPL season..

4 of 16 with byes got dropped.
#15 TFA with zero points
#10 Beach Sudyka DPL with 2 points
#9 OVC with a lone win and 3 points

#5 Legends DPL got a tough bracket got dropped with 6 points.
