Silverlakes Fall Showcase

I’m kind of new here, mostly just read and don’t post too much, however after seeing many of the 06’ games this weekend at Silverlakes, I felt the need to post my opinions, I’m not anyone special, just simply want to see if anyone else saw what I saw.

1. San Juan-Great team, pass phenomenally, play pretty soccer, very strong, but play clean and well coached. I did hear they were missing 4 top players for the Legends game, so that loss to Legends makes more sense now. However, when they came back the next game to beat BeachFC LB, they played them very well. BeachFC LB was definitely off that game and not themselves. But, props to San Juan, as they capitalized and were the better team for sure.

2. Beach FC vs Legends game this morning. This is the one that gets me. Final was 1-0 Legends. Last time these two played, it was also 1-0 (with Legends A team, meaning the girls who usually play up were ALL there for both games) I’m sorry, but I do not understand the hype of Legends. Maybe they just don’t know how to play BeachFC LB, but this game could’ve gone either way, actually BeachFC LB had many scoring opportunities that they just didn’t capitalize on, very easily could’ve won had they capitalized on those opportunities. Here’s my issue. Why do Legends get so much hype? The two forwards are strong, don’t get me wrong, but they don’t pass, just take the ball well to goal and score, Beach easily shut them down, with the exception of 1 defensive error and the forward got a breakaway. That’s all they did. The large defender in the back is big and that’s it. EVERY single time she got the ball, all she did is boot it up to the forwards. ONE time, she controlled it and passed it to her outside back, other than that, all kickball. BeachFC LB has a little baller up front and was beating her to every ball. The only way the Legends defender could handle it was by being dirty. She could’ve and did hurt this forward only because she can (due to her size) and seemed to throw a “tantrum” of sorts because she was getting beat. She ended up with a yellow card and the Legends coach benched her (the Legends defender) for the rest of the game, in the 2nd half (respect to the Legends coach for recognizing that she was going to hurt this player and removed her from the game after the yellow card) She has little skill, is only big and has a big kick. Legends played kickball most of the game, boot it up to the forwards. This is NOT soccer, sure they win a lot, but they don’t play pretty soccer, NOTHING compared to San Juan, who played strong, not dirty, and played beautiful soccer. BeachFC LB always handles Legends to a tight game only losing 1-0 multiple times, why is that? Do Legends always play this much kickball? If so, why are so many in support of that and call them GREAT when they don’t play pretty soccer, but just win a lot because they boot it to the forwards and they score? Oh and after hearing the Beach FC LB parents yelling wanting to show the ref the video of the Legends defender playing so dirty, I asked the dad to see the video after the game and WOW, such a dirty play! She didn’t even attempt to play the ball. She went in to hurt that BeachFC LB little forward and in my opinion, that’s not right. If she were my daughter, I would’ve yanked her butt off the field. That’s not how you play soocer, I don’t care how frustrated you are that you’re getting beat by a girl a quarter of your size.

3. Who’s tournament was this? It was absolutely ridiculous for San Juan and Legends to all be in the same bracket, while other groups like LAGSB and LAFC Salazar had a relative cake walk to the quarterfinals.

4. Beach FC LB was fun to watch against Legends. It’s too bad they played in SCDSL rather than a stronger league like DPL. They went undefeated in league, and unfortunately playing weaker teams all Fall hindered their playing and were sticker shocked, so to speak, when they met up with San Juan. But, came back strong and looked more like themselves against Legends.

5. As many say on here, it would be so nice if they could form a League were ALL of the top teams could play together and tournaments can get better with equal bracketing. Also, wish San Juan was down south more often, would be good for their development as I’m sure they destroy teams up north, but good for all of these teams to learn what beautiful soccer looks like, playing out of the back, progressing up the field by passing, rarely playing kickball and those girls first touch was ridiculous. Every pass seemed to have a purpose. They are a fun team to watch play and wish more teams could develop girls that way...

6. LAGSB and LAFC both play pretty soccer, as well. Salazar has really developed that team over the last couple years. LAGSB has been and continues to be strong and play pretty soccer without being dirty, too.

Thanks for listening, just my personal opinion on some of the games, that’s all, I’m no professional lol, but after seeing the Legends vs BeachFC game and watched Legends struggle to play them, I just want to understand their hype. Those 2 forwards and 1 defender, who have been playing up with Legends 05’ DA, are just strong and fast, but not as skilled and “pretty” of players as so many that I see out there. It’s too bad Legends puts so much emphasis on big, strong, athletic, and winning...as they’re missing out on some other players who are smaller, but play beautiful soccer. Sure they win a lot and by a lot (except against Beach FC LB for some reason) but they play a lot of kick ball and I’m shocked that
so many on this forum don’t talk about that...

Like I said, I’m new, so maybe I need to watch more of their games. Would love to hear from NON-LEGENDS parents, as of course, Legends parents will disagree with me, and tell me if you’ve seen them play this much kickball, too?

Thanks! Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!!!

Can't speak to Legends this weekend but the thing I can say about them more than any other team is they punish you for mistakes. Very dynamic scoring team

Great post. If you are not an expert you certainly are observant and recognize how to play the game. Much appreciated. I am glad the Legends coach benched her player. Now I respect him even more. Nice compliments on the San Juan team also. They do play up a year to get more competition. Spring and fall leagues, college showcase events. Everything but state cup. Trying for their third state cup in a row. When San
Juan played the Legends at Surf Cup last year the Legends team played a very clean game. They beat San Juan 1-0 on a corner kick for the
second year in a row.
Hope the girls have good games tomorrow!

The Legends actually played horrible against Beach . Beach plays more of the park the bus style of soccer. They are also one of the more physical teams we play .. With the legends already through to the next round most of the starters got plenty of rest in this game ...Not because of your supposed dirty play. Hope to see you out there this morning soccer critic

A Beach Perez parent criticizing another team for being overly physical and playing direct??? Pot, kettle, and all of that...

Welcome to the forum. Haven't had good trash talk, uhh, blunt criticisms since national cup last year.

Just an fyi on some of the scheduling and brackets, some of the match up's were based on the remaining DPL games for the DPL Clubs, Group E - Pats, Royals, LA Premier, Group D - RSC and Del Sol, and Group C - Galaxy SD and Eagles.

Based on that and who ended up getting through to the Qtr 's it seemed like it worked itself out pretty well. Looks to be good games today. Good luck to all the ladies.

So at the expense of balanced competition the schedule was made to accommodate DPL, a league that only exists because clubs signed up parents on an imaginary DA2 league and then had to deliver something when US Soccer wanted nothing to do with it? What interesting times we live in.

I don't know about the other DPL age groups if it was/is the same in terms of games being both tournament and league. No DA at this age group, so 2006 kids and teams playing in DPL are playing in the league dictated by their respective clubs. Not a whole lot of choice in the matter.

I’ve seen both teams play better games. Legends is a talented but very one dimensional team. Unlike the post above I do see the hype. Their strikers have out of this world speed, while their defense is more than solid. With that being said I’m glad the defender was removed from the game. You can’t blind-side body check a player half your size twice. I have respect for the coach for making the right decision. It was not a “supposed dirty play”, it was a horribly dirty play from a great defender who should know better.
To say Beach plays “park the bus style” would be like saying Legends plays “AYSO soccer” which means close your eyes and kick the ball to your forwards. Both teams deserve more credit for a hard fought game. Good luck today to all the teams still in it.

I agree with some of what you wrote, but Beach Perez hasn't been known to play the style of soccer that you say you prefer, so I'm curious as to why your daughter is at Beach?

But don't Legends have a phenomenal guest or two?
Again, I think we need to give these girls some credit. The Legends core team has extraordinary talent. You can make comments on the style of play, but you can’t take away from the fact that they are a talented group. I would say the same for Beach. I saw the first half of the Beach game against San Juan and assumed that Legends was going to beat Beach relatively easily. Beach found ways to move the ball up the field despite great pressure from the Legends every step of the way. Beach was shell shocked by the speed and pressure from San Juan. (I don’t think playing in SCDSL did them any favors, they should have played in the DA league) San Juan is what all of our teams should aspire to be. Their speed, strength and possession play was beautiful to watch. I would love to see them match up against Legends in the finals.

DPL wouldn’t let Beach enter 2 teams into DPL even though the league formed a u13 Division AFTER all the teams were formed. Beach being unique in that they have a LB and SB region that consolidates at the Academy level (not franchises or affiliates, it’s one organization) so they have 2 “Pre-Academy” teams, one SouthBay and one in Long Beach these players are the main pool of players for next years DA and DPL teams.

DPL put the club in a bad spot but it is what it is.

San Juan is definitely a legit team!

Where were the guests from? Some blues players since they decided not to play as a team this weekend?

1 guest. Used to be with Legends. My understanding is that due to the distance between where they live and Legends practice facility, went for a club a little closer (and club/coach may be good fit for them too of course)

On any given day, these any of these top teams can beat each other depending on (1) match-ups exploited (2) how the girls come out/conditioning/how tired they are (3) guests players (4) good luck or bad bounces.

0-0 Score - SJ and LAGSB

As you get older, you’re gonna see more scoreless defensive standoffs with a premium placed on players that can make scoring plays whether by skill or speed where all the girls on the field can connect passes. You’re gonna have to get that play and hold the other team scoreless to get that 1-0 or 2-0 score in order to consistently win.

Galaxy vs. SJ was a complete back and forth. Both defenses completely dominated and played fantastic. Not many shots on goal from either team. Parents on both sides were whispering to each other, ‘We could win this game.’ SJ had one fantastic scoring opportunity but Galaxy goalie had a great save. PKs were 6 straight on both sides until Galaxy goalie came up with a great save.

Great game San Juan and thanks for making the trip! Always great to play the best.

Another Galaxy-Legends final! Keep it classy and safe and good luck to all the little ladies out there!
