I saw this yesterday and thought it was disappointing. Yes, it’s not in keeping with the LOTG to not use a coin but...the ref showed some initiative and you would hope even the stuffiest of office-bound referee coordinators might just raise a smile.

Have we become so robotic and boring within sport and life that we cannot appreciate initiative or something that isn’t strictly following the letter of law but nonetheless doesn’t negatively impact proceedings? It looks that way.

Oh man, I hope US Soccer doesn't get a hold of any of the parents game tape on some of my games. I do it probably twice a year. Coins are always flying out of my pocket and I usually give it to the player that finds it.

This is one part of the game that should be simple. I always try to look the part, and do the simple things correctly. If you can not do the basics correct, like remember your coin, flag, or your uniform how can you start the game with the spectators respecting you. If you miss the basics you do not look professional and now every parent on the sideline thinks they know the game better than you. Not going back to get the coin is just lazy.

Its like refs who do drop balls to the keeper from the half line. If your that lazy walk into the 18 and drop it for the keeper, but show that you know the simple things like how to do a restart.

Lets see, 3 games into the day, with only 10 minutes between matches. U15 age group and we're running late. I'll guess I'll be "lazy" and pass the sprint and wasted minute to go fetch my backup coin and just do ro-sham-bo it. This kids like it better anyways. Who watches the coin toss anyways? Hard to think it is reasonable to say that referee's doing all these matches are lazy.

I have a feeling that SageMajor is going to think that he knows more than a referee no matter how the kickoff is decided.

What looks more unprofessional is delaying the game while you run around trying to locate something as trivial as a coin. Good on the ref for improvising and going to rock paper scissors. We all make mistakes, it's how you respond to those mistakes that's important. I'm sure this ref will never forget his coin again. A 3 week ban is an overreaction, a reprimand, at worst, was warranted. Obviously, the FA is more concerned about form than substance.

Big difference between a pro game and a youth game. I agree with you if it is a higher level game. Pro game needs to have an actual coin toss. Kids game...rock-paper-scissors, coin toss, etc, those are all fine.

Agreed. Big mistake from the FA in making this such a big deal. That being said, for those who say he should have gone and got his coin are not getting that it was televised and his bag probably back in the referee changing area. He could hardly have jogged back under the stands for the coin while the telecast waited.

Still..if anywhere, this is something I would have expected to see in Scotland. Previous gaffes:

Incidentally, how the SFA thought allowing referees to be sponsored by Specsavers was a good idea is beyond me. Ensures referees are shown no respect from the start.

I don't understand why he allowed rock paper scissors...why not just write heads/tails in your book and ask the visiting player to call it heads or tails?? It's 50/50 at that point anyway.

As referees I hate to see this stickler side of the game, most games at the amateur level won't have a goal scored from the halfway mark or within the first minute...trivial issue.

I would like to say that the goal being disallowed for the corner kick situation is correct for one reason only...the mechanical/technical work of the referee. The player stands over the ball as the defender is told to move back, that signals to me as a player that the ball is dead. Also, the way the blue team acts on this is to deceive the opposing team in a really significant way. It looks ugly on TV also how the blue player just passes the ball to himself, which looks like two touch.

All in all, the blue team gained a significant advantage by having the opposing player moved back when the ball was in play...ifab should look to make corner kicks leave the arch so we dontd have an issue like this again..just overall ugly on both sides of it.

Sage Major is, in fact, a referee.

Why the need for back up coins? Why not just carry a coin with you to the kick off? I can whistle pretty loudly without a whistle. So do most people. Does that mean if we forget our whistles we shouldn't run back to get it and simply whistle the game without it? If not, why?
