Futbol or Football in LA High Schools

A lot of schools in LA/Ventura county hold try outs in July/August before the "club" season starts to avoid conflicts later in the fall with the club season. The time between end of club and beginning of HS is too short to hold try outs, and begin practice.

I guess I'm just used to the conflict - high school tryouts right after school in the afternoon, club practices after that. My first thought was whether that was allowed in the CIF section rules.

OC schools have summer high school “league”. Show up. Practice for a week or 3. Then play 6-8 scrimmages.
Formal tryouts are the first week of school. But the summer “league” is where coaches make most of their decisions.

Is this a grey area with CIF rules?

It's allowed in the CIF-SS Rules.

FWIW that's not why our school has tryouts in August. They do it then because kids who make the team don't have to take PE and instead do "soccer conditioning" during that time. Holding it earlier doesn't really eliminate conflicts either. We have tryouts this week and one of the days will be before club practice.

However, no ussda unless you have a waiver.[/QUOTE]

For athletes in private school only. If you go to a public school there are no waivers, says so right in the USSDA by laws. So not only do you have to pay to play, you have to pay to go to school and then the USSDA figures that you have spent enough money and you can play high school soccer.

I think more surfers should take up golf.

More golfers should take up surfing.... harder to get a tee time than find a spot on the water.

We live blocks away from the the local course but I would rather be in the water at the crack of dawn, golf is fun but don't have the 3-4hrs to play most days.

http://swellmagnet.com/ the creators son plays for a local team ;)
