San Diego Section boys Open Playoffs

In San Diego Section, the top 20 teams based on the 5-year weighted average are placed in Division 1. The top 8 of those teams in the Section Power Rankings play in the Open playoffs, the remaining 12 in Division 1 playoffs.

So who will be in Open playoffs? Based on current Power rankings, Torrey Pines is untouchable in the top spot. The next three spots (who get opening-round home games) could be Canyon Crest, San Marcos, San Pasqual, Eastlake, La Costa Canyon, Poway, St Augustine, or Cathedral. Other schools that have a slim mathematical chance to get into Open Playoffs, but not a home spot, are San Diego, Coronado, or Carlsbad.

A little more detail -

1. Torrey Pines (18-0-3) will finish #1, no one can catch them.
2. Canyon Crest (16-1-6), just down the road from TP, and 3. San Marcos (16-1-3), can finish #2 or #3.
4. San Pasqual (12-2-4), 5. Eastlake (13-4-4), 6. La Costa Canyon (11-5-5), 7. Poway (15-6-2), 8. St Augustine (6-6-4), and 9. Cathedral (7-4-6) can finish #4 - #8, or possibly down in the Div 1 playoffs.
10. San Diego (7-8-9), 11. Coronado (8-6-4), 13. Carlsbad (5-7-6) also have chances to break into the playoffs.

What really makes it strange is the mixed leagues with several divisions in each.

The leagues are usually created for geographic reasons, which recognizes traditional rivalries and reduces travel costs. There are also some leagues made up of really small schools so that they can have more even competition.

Not entirely accurate but almost. Power Rankings has now moved to a 3 year average for Pre-Season Division Rankings.

As I understand it, Power Rankings are used to determine, within a Division, whether or where schools will be placed in that Division's playoffs and where seeded that year (with the special case of the DI-Open split every year). Promotion or relegation among divisions takes place after the season, based on the multiple-year weighted average of rankings across the whole section, not just within the existing Division. I was not aware that it had been trimmed to 3 years.

Absolutely correct!

Open Division updates from last night's games --

#3 San Marcos beat Oceanside 4-0.
#4 San Pasqual beat Valley Center 4-1.
Poway beat Del Norte 1-0, which bumped them up to a tie with #6 La Costa Canyon.

I do believe Carlsbad has clinched league after tonights win over SDA, correct me if I'm wrong. These numbers and rules are confusing. Still, I do not discount CIF teams. Games this season have mainly been tight, 1 point wins. It's all in or else at this point. Upsets can happen for those teams that lack discipline or tactical coaching. Saw that this season and reason for close games. So....let the games really begin!!!

Last night's games --

#1 Torrey Pines beat Sage Creek 3-1.
#2 Canyon Crest beat #6 La Costa Canyon 1-0.
#4 San Pasqual beat Fallbrook 1-0.
#7 Eastlake beat Chula Vista 2-0.

Resulting from those games and other game results from former opponents of teams on the list, Poway moved up to #5, Eastlake down to #7.

Games having possible effect on Open playoff selection --

#3 San Marcos tied Mission Hills 2-2.
San Pasqual beat Fallbrook 5-0 while Poway beat RB 1-0. Since RB has better numbers than Fallbrook, that puts Poway in #4 spot with 44.96, and San Pasqual in #5 at 44.95.

Tomorrow's games among the current Open Division teams --
Torrey Pines at La Costa Canyon
Canyon Crest Academy at San Dieguito Academy

Add San Pasqual hosting Escondido tonight. They tied 1-1 in their first Valley League game a few days a go, giving San Pasqual 41 points.

An irritating practice of CIF SD is that they wipe out the Power Rankings values late Friday night before thte seeding meeting tomorrow. Right after finding out that San Pasqual tied Escondido 2-2 and Canyon Crest tied San Diego Academy 1-1, the standings reverted to alphabetical, which has the disconcerting effect of putting undefeated Torrey Pines at the bottom.
