06' CAL SOUTH PRO+ODP LIST!!

How does this work for kids who likely will be getting offers to join U12 Development Academy teams? They may not be in the DA in March for the first camp, but they will by the time the summer camp rolls around and therefore be ineligible for Pro+/ODP (under USSDA rules).

So They are ineligible to participate if they are in DA? Or has it changed?

So they have a choice.
I'm more thinking of the player who is trying out for DA, wants to go to a DA team, but just hasn't heard by mid-March, which seems possible. They go to the ODP tryouts and make the Summer camp team announced immediately at the conclusion of the third day. Then they make a DA team. Is there then a waitlist Cal South then draws upon? I assume this happens whenever they are dealing with an DA entry-point age group, whereas in older age groups the kids have all made their choices and sorted themselves out.

There are a ton of kids on that list who fall into this category, especially from clubs that have U12 development academy teams, the core of which will come from the best players on their current 2006 teams.

Anyone happen to catch the names of those boys who made it this weekend?
I didn't write down the names but the final selection was 24 boys. However, a few of them (3-5 boys) apparently we're still in contention for DA so the number will probably change before for the July camp.

Thanks. I was there too and heard that much, but I thought someone might have checked off the names (as it looks like someone did on the girls side based on a post on the G06 board). I know in a few cases, boys whose names were not on the list found out from Hoffman that they had made their club's DA team (because Hoffman had called the Academy Director to check right before the selection meeting). As you say, the 24 were named with the expectation that the final number will drop. The dad of one of the defenders selected told me he was supposed to hear about Academy this week.

Cudos to the parent who did that for the girls, that took some time and effort. From what I heard several of the DA teams sent notifications to players over the weekend which ironically aligned with this ODP final list. I believe ODP system has its values and offers next level opportunities for the kids however, I was not a fan of how Cal South evaluated the boys playing 11v11 on a full size field and goals.

On the 11 w/ full size goals issue, it made more sense once Hoffman revealed at the meeting that the 06 team would likely be playing up in the 05 division for the Region IV ODP championships in AZ. My assumption is that not all states are selecting 06 teams and therefore there won't be an 06 tournament. If we play in the 05 group, that means we'll be playing 11 v. 11 w/ full size goals, so I suppose it makes some sense to see if the kids can adapt to that.

I agree, once Hoffman revealed that "minor" detail it made a bit more sense however, still not a fan of it for this age group. They still need another year to mature and develop their physical strength to play on a full field. I have the same assumption as you. From the first try out date my impression was Cal South did not have a solid direction for what they wanted to do with this age group. In my opinion playing up in the 05 age group is not the right direction. Will it help them develop, maybe, could it hurt their development possibly. I was disappointed that my son was not selected to the final 24 but happy he did make the final 32.

I now have a different opinion in regards to playing up vs last season. My son's 06 team played up last season in the flight one 05 age group 11v11 . I was hesitant at first thinking if it would hurt the boys confidence but it didnt!! Did they win? NO,
they won one game tied one and lost the rest , We had 12 or 13 players and played season that way. But what they got was way more valuable, They truly developed, playing out of the back , game speed , rotations their ability to change the game all of that improved so much. if the 06s play up in ODP they will develop, may not win but they will develop just have to ask your selves which one is more important now.

Thanks I appreciate the perspective.

Sounds like everyone in the final group will be brought back to the Winter Pool even if they didn't make the group going to Ojai, so your son will have another chance. Congrats to him for making it this far. Given that 2006 is the only year in which every kid was initially eligible (because everyone was playing at President's Cup, including kids who are going to DA for next year), it was a noteworthy accomplishment just to be named to the list in the first place, let alone be invited to the second weekend.

I must have missed the part about inviting the final 32 to the winter camp. For the winter camp I thought it would only be the 24 from this camp. Guess I'll just wait and see if we get an email later this fall.

Thanks for the congrats. Since you were there on Sunday congrats to your son as well.

Are they going to post the top 24 players names selected on Calsouth website? Not so far.
