National Cup

Since I enjoy crunching numbers in my spare time.
Here are the average rankings per group based on Tango's rankings.
I took each teams ranking from each group and added them together then divided that number by the number of teams in the group.
Group A is the only one with 3 teams rather than 4.

Group A- 18.3
Group B-31.75
Group C-17.75
Group D-18
Group E-14
Group F-17.25
Group G-16.25
Group H-30

So based on this group E has the lowest average and Group B has the highest average.
Curious to see if the winners from groups like E and G will be more battle tested going forward or more beat up.

Ah, so we pulled the 3rd toughest bracket (F). Character is built on adversity.

Good luck to everyone playing. See you on the sidelines.

Let the debate begin...

Interested to see the teams that opted for Presidents.

State Cup - Presidents

Why are State Cup's level of play rules consistently off the mark for just the Coast Soccer League? Almost across the board at the youngers the rules allow the top teams from the top Coast level to play at a lower level of Sate Cup than the top teams from SCDSL and even SDDA. Totally off the mark--while one could easily make the case SCDSL has a higher number of top level teams than CSL, it's clearly not the case that the top flight CSL teams belong in Mayors while the top SDDA teams belong in Presidents (as the 2008 guide allows) or that the top flight CSL teams belong in Presidents while the top flight SDDA and SCDSL teams belong in National (as the 2005 guide allows).

I agree in the 05 age group this year they messed this one up. At the lower age groups (This years 07's and 08's) CSL only has Bronze, so you can't make every team that is in CSL play presidents. But in the 05 there is one Silver Elite bracket of 12 teams. If State cup is going to force teams from the other leagues to play National cup then they should force every team from Silver Elite CSL to be in National cup.
Overall, most of the teams from Silver Elite that could have made any kind of run in the National cup stepped up and took on the challenge but the few that didn't may muddy the waters in presidents.
Another option that makes sense to me is that the top 16 or at least 8 teams from CSL league cup have to play National cup.

Yeah, but it's not just this year. It seems routine...Last year the top flight CSL GU12 teams were allowed to play Presidents rather than National while the top flight SDDA and SCDSL GU12 teams had to play National. And certain clubs/teams took advantage of it. Just as with the 05 age group this year (the non-existent "Gold 2005s"), last year's U12 level of play guide showed a non-existent tier of CSL (the "Gold U12s") required to play in National Cup .

And it's not just the CSL ages/sexes with a single flight. While you point out a valid reason a two-second of thought rule at the girls' 2008 level wouldn't work (can't base the rule on flight since there is only one tier of "Bronze"), that's not the case for the boys 2008 level, which splits the teams into 2 flights of bronze and silver, but still allows the silver flight to play in Mayors of all things while the top flight 08s from SDDA and SCSDL play two levels above in Presidents.

It's like someone just doesn't do their work...if they care enough to mandate that teams have to play at a certain level for State Cup rather than letting them self-select, they should care enough to spend two minutes looking at the levels of play in the league so that the rules make sense and are applied evenly. I like your suggestion for the single flighted ages/sexes.

Do we really need 3 or 4 flights for a state cup tournament? Should all be one big flight and see what happens.
If you are playing club soccer, you should compete.

I disagree. There are so many teams, and such a variance of ability, it doesn't make sense to have everyone compete in the same tournament. It's no different at the high school level with different divisions based on the size of the high school/ability level of the team (or college for that matter - D1, D2, etc).

I agree neither team gains anything when the gap in ability between two teams is too great. 8-0 blowouts are bad for everyone and are very discouraging to the lower level team. It's up to the coach to know the true level of their team and place them appropriately.

Many moons ago there was only one level of state cup up until U12 when national cup started. The brackets were seeded and the first weekend was filled with blowouts. There were lots of upset parents due to having to drive up to Lancaster in order to watch their kids teams get humiliated. Again not good for anyone.

You are probably right. But it would eliminate any sandbagging. Wait a few weeks and this board will be full of "the team that won mayors/governors should have been in a higher level".

I realize most of us have a weekend off, but it looks like it's almost time to get this show on the road!

Any thoughts on brackets, favorites, matchups, sleepers, etc?

Should be a good time, just not diggin the one game per day.

I'm sure Tech is got his breakdowns fine tuned and ready for print.
