NATIONAL CUP - 2018

http://cysa.affinitysoccer.com/tour...mentguid=8F336501-E4EB-43DD-8288-B1577107F046

Brackets have been up for a while, but I guess everybody's been on vacation so I'll get the ball rolling. Based on last years model, it looks like we'll have at least the top 2 from each bracket advance to round 2. Round 2 will have 8 brackets with 4 teams each for a total of 32 teams. Top 2 teams of round 2 will advance to final 16 single elimination games.

We have 11 brackets, and if top 2 advance, we'll need another 10 teams for round 2. Not sure where those teams will come from, but my guess is they may be wildcards. With no DA, no ECNL (at least there were no ECNL teams last year), and no apparent teams receiving bye's (all the top teams in SCDSL, DPL, & CSL are included in round 1 brackets), I don't see where those other 10 teams can come from other than wildcards. For those in the know, please fill us in.

Quick Hits:

Big props to: Fram Ferren, UIFC Venom, United L.A., BYSC Corona, CDA Slammers FC HB, CDA Slammers FC Orange - Esparza, Arsenal West ECNL II, Arsenal FC South ECNL II.
All Silver Elite or Flight 2 teams electing to play National Cup instead of Presidents.

Wait a Minute: Arsenal West ECNL II, Arsenal FC South ECNL II. hmm.

Thumbs Down to: 1) SoCal Academy Chavez, CSL Gold and winners of league cup playing Presidents instead of National Cup. 2) Cal South for using CRL standings to seed top teams when games were last played in August. Yes, I know its in the rules, but its still lazy imo.

Where Are You?: Notts Forest Red, no league cup (understandable based on travel), but no State Cup???

Should be Here: Anaheim Surf - Vasquez, your sister team Anaheim Surf White - Martinez is playing National Cup and they finished 6th in Flight 1 Europa while you finished 2nd.

Who Are You?: United FC 04 Black, couldn't find you anywhere, what league do you play in?

Last year there was a similar number of teams in the first round and only second 16 teams made it to the second round to form 4 groups of 4. The second round was another round of group play with the top two teams from each group advancing out of these groups into single elimination.

Of course that was last year and they may do things completely different this year.

The question is which Arsenal “ECNL2” team will get to use their ECNL players? It’s the Arsenal way!

This is what I thought - each bracket winner plus 4 wild cards. The second round last year was 3 more games, not single elimination, which was nice. You got your money's worth if you made it to the second weekend.

Last year the top 4 teams in the CRL standings got a bye into the second round so it was just the group winners that advanced into the second round but it does not look like any teams got a bye this year. I agree that have group play for the second round was nice last year.

It should be interesting as there are 4-5 really strong teams but no one team that is the real clear favorite to win it all.

Are you guys looking at the format for our own age group from last year. I looked at the 03/u-14 age group from last year, which is our age group this year. I thought that would be the most appropriate.

In that case 32 teams from the first round (not sure if it included bye teams) passed to the 2nd round. Meaning that at least top 2 in each bracket will advance, and probably additional wild cards to round out the 32.

Second round was then 8 brackets of 4 teams each, and then top 2 from each of those brackets made up the final 16 single elimination games.

What do they do with the 3 team brackets? There is an odd number of them so they cannot play cross brackets? I looked at past years and did not did see anything like it.

I'm assuming they probably just take the top 2.
We were debating this this weekend. They could have excluded 2 teams to make all brackets with 4 teams. Apparently they are more than a few teams that are going to get creamed. They could have also given a few teams a bye for the first weekend to even the brackets. If they just take the top 2 teams from the 3 team brackets, the losers only get 2 games despite paying a tournament fee. Plus there does not appear to be any thought into which teams are in the 3 team brackets. Based of the seeding (assuming that they are right eventhough we know that they are not accurate) we were trying to determine whether a 3 team bracket was advantageous for the teams.

We are in a 3 team bracket and we are wondering if we get our third game by playing another 3 team bracket....so after 2 games and for the 3rd game:, 1 plays 3, 2 plays 2 and 3 plays 1. The problem with that is that there are only 3 brackets with 3 teams - A, I and J, not four. If they don't do that, then they are going to have to give more points to a win in a 3 team bracket, otherwise you wouldn't be able to qualify with a wildcard - you'd be down the points of one game.

As for seeding, Legends Riverside is first in CRL and Fullerton was first in CSL - if they had to square off in the first round of pool play, I'd say there was something fishy going on. I can't figure the other 3 team bracket out.

I've seen 3 team brackets versus 4 team brackets in ODP National Championships games and I know a 2 win team (So Cal B03's a few years ago) lost out of advancing due to points but I don't remember how they did the points.

I guess time will tell.

I really doubt you will play other brackets. The trade off here may simply be that it is easier to be one of the top 2 teams in the bracket (you just have to be better than one of the two other teams) yet it is harder, if not impossible, to be a wildcard.

I think when they compare the three team bracket results to the four team bracket results they look at points per game (Total Points divided by games played).

Why would they do that? Why would you think that could be a solution? Have you ever been involved in a tournament before?

This is an interesting dilemma but life is not fair and stupid people are sometimes put in charge of things they have no clue about.

I would love to hear what you think will happen. It sounds like you have some experience.

I’ve seen every single harebrained bs plan put into action over on the east coast. I’ll bet they will plan on just 2 games per team and then throw in a third to break a tie if necessary. Moms will throw a fit about it but nothing will happen.

Two games for all the three team brackets. Then if wildcards are needed they will look at points per game first.

A 1-1 three team bracket team will have 1.5 (3/2) points per game. A 1-1-1 four team bracket team will have 1.25 (4/3) points per game.
